The Edge Dakura Series of safety glasses from Wolf Peak comes in a wide variety of styles, lens colors and applications. All the glasses are based around the same strong yet flexible nylon frame. Some of the newest additions to the Dakura line include polarized and anti-fog lenses, and even a welding lens option that gives infrared protection of either an IR3 or IR5.

The particular safety glass that we have from Edge are the Dakura Blue Mirror Lens (model number SW118). The lenses of these glasses are made of polycarbonate and fully comply with ANSI Z87.1+ 2003 high impact standards. What this means is that these lenses have been designed to meet several key tests requirements. These include a high impact test which has a 17.6 ounce pointed projectile dropped from a height of 50 inches onto the glasses. The requirement is that the lenses must not fracture and they must stay intact in the frames. Another part of the testing is that the lens must meet the high velocity impact test which dictates that a quarter inch steel ball be fired at the lenses with a speed of 150 feet per second. In this test, the lenses can not hit the eye, shall not shatter and the glasses must be kept intact. The short story is that Dakura Blue Mirror Lens meets these standards. On top of the safety function, these lenses also offer protection from 99.9% UVA, UVB and UVC rays and the gray smoke tinted lenses let only 12% of the total amount of light to pass though them. To help in even brighter conditions, the blue mirror coating on the lens helps reflect intense light.

To test the glasses, well, we used them. From day one, we wore them all the time, even when not at work, because they fit like a nice pair of sporty wrap-around sunglasses. We have used them for things like operating yard equipment such as edgers, mowers and weed eaters and for on-the-job when using grinders, saws and nail guns. What we found is that we actually kept these on our faces more because of the style and versatility than the mere fact that we needed safety glasses. They are cool sunglasses. The days of ugly, boxy, poor fitting safety glasses have met their end on our eyes. The anti-fog feature is a great addition too, since many times we have to go in and out of air conditioned buildings. We found that these glasses pretty much never fogged up when going from cold to hot. As far as comfort, since they are so lightweight, you don’t even know they are on. The one thing that we did see is that if you have a smaller sized head or face, these glasses might feel too wide for you. We would suggest looking for something else that fits better. The key with safety gear is that in order for it to do its job, it has to fit properly and in the case of safety glasses, you want to make sure they fit your face well, that you have good visibility out of them, and that they stay put once you put them on.

The Edge Dakura Blue Mirror Lens safety glasses are a winner with us. We liked the sporty look and this is one case where form and function live in perfect harmony. You can be safe and look cool doing it. Think about it, rather then just having a cheesy pair of sunglasses, you can wear a pair of these and never have to worry about whether your eyes are properly protected. If you show up at the gun range or are involved in some extreme sports, these glasses have you covered. For our value rating we gave these glasses a 9/10 because, for the money, they cost less than almost any old pair of glasses and offer real-world safety. For our performance rating we gave these a 9/10 because not only do they offer great safety performance and meet all the latest standards, they look great while doing it.
