Bosch GTS1031 10″ Jobsite Table Saw Review

Bosch GTS1031 10" Jobsite Table Saw Review

We were impressed with the Bosch Axial Glide miter saw which revolutionized close-quarters cutting. Building on their solution-based approach to products, the company has finally addressed the need for a truly portable full-power jobsite table saw. The Bosch GTS1031 table saw can be carried by its single handle. The saw stays center-balanced, and all accessories store safely and securely onboard. Whether it would measure up as one of the best portable jobsite table saws remained to be seen.

How Portable is the Bosch GTS1031 Table Saw?

You can actually carry the Bosch GTS1031 table saw in one hand and a GTA500 stand in the other. Weighing in at a manageable 52 pounds, and this is one 15-amp jobsite table saw that does a great job of balancing portability and raw cutting power.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there are other portable table saws that are lighter than Bosch’s GTS1031 (who’s name sounds like a cross between a fast production car and a tax document). However, Bosch made this saw jobsite tough. Give the other saws some wet lumber and you might smoke the motor, bog them down, or send them off a second-story porch in frustration. Bosch designed the GTS1031 with two things in mind: portability and power.

Bosch GTS1031 Table Saw Features

I can’t tell you how many times we’ve pulled out other jobsite saws only to have accessories fall off, or require off-tool storage. Bosch designed the GTS1031, however, to securely hold all of its accessories, even including the arbor wrenches (both of them) and an allen wrench for adjusting the riving knife and dust ejection points among other things.

Our favorite was the rip fence, which simply flipped upside down and stored underneath the table – clever! About the most difficult adjustment was the riving knife, which is a tool-less maneuver, but one which requires you to stick your hand way into the blade cavity to reach the release lever. When making any adjustments to the blade, it goes without saying (but we’ll say it anyway) to disconnect power to the saw as a precaution.

Power to Spare

Now let’s talk power. The 15-amp motor sits underneath the aluminum table. It features replaceable brushes so you can expect longer life from the saw. The gearing for adjusting the blade height also looked to be built with durability in mind and was well-greased. Cranking the height on the saw was simple and, unlike many saws I’ve used, even bevel adjustments were a snap and didn’t require a ton of effort to move the blade. We found that we could easily loosen the bevel lock and slide the assembly along its arc until we got to the required angle.

The saw itself is remarkably compact, measuring just 22.5″ square and a little over a foot in height (13″ to be more precise). A steel “roll cage” encloses the 4 HP 15-amp motor. Next, a rubber handle sits at the center of the right side of the saw. Basically, we found it very easy to toss the saw into the back of a pickup truck or work van.

When you carry it deck-inward, the weight of the saw presses in slightly against your leg – which actually steadies the saw somewhat, making it more manageable, though at 52-pounds let’s not go so far as to call this saw a breeze to carry. The Bosch GTS1031 included cord wrap, and the simple design of the frame also makes it easy to store up against a wall inside your shop when not in use. This tool stays out of sight until needed.

Bosch GTS1031 Table Saw Testing and Use

With this saw, it was a very easy thing to plug it on and get started. The included cord is a reasonable length, but you’ll still need an extension cord unless you happen to be right next to an outlet in your workshop. Raising and lowering the blade is a smooth process and we found the mechanism to be nice and stiff, so you can be very precise with your cut depth. Only time will reveal whether or not this stays tight over the long haul, but it seems to be well-made. Mounting the accessories, like the smart guard system is quick. You just raise the riving knife using the release lever.

The riving knife locks into a lower and upper position through the use of two sets of pins. In the upper position, it accepts the barrier guard, which you can remove from below the saw. It attaches easily with a lever lock and the anti-kickback device can then be placed on the back of the riving knife such that the teeth are set to grab any wood brought forward by the blade.

Split Guard and Fence

The physical nature of the barrier guard assembly precludes you from placing your fingers anywhere near the cutting surface of the blade. We (and Bosch) recommend keeping this guard on the saw anytime you are doing “through” cuts. All-in-all, the table saw’s included safety features are more than adequate to keep you from encountering any unfortunate accidents. Removing them, or using the tool improperly, however, will considerably raise your level of risk.

Compared to some of the other miter saws we’ve used, the Bosch GTS1031 guard system is much easier to install and remove when necessary (and to put the saw back into portable mode). We timed ourselves and assembled and tore down the saw in just over 2 minutes – and we were confident that our time would get better with more practice. The table is made of machined cast aluminum and is texture-coated to make it fairly slick – something that really helped when cutting larger pieces of 3/4″ plywood for a workbench surface.

Extending the Table

As for extending the table—we found that super-easy. You just lift the table extension handle upwards and slide the table to the right. This gives you a full 18″ of rip width to the rip fence with your material to the right of the blade. Collapsed, you get up to 10″. The motion of the rip fence and the table extension were smooth. While the fence had some wobble in it at the far end – this completely disappeared when you locked it down – and the shape of the rear of the fence locked it straight every time. It’s a good system and more than adequate for a low-cost portable saw like this. We’ve seen more robust fence systems. But typically the trade-off has been in weight as well as cost.

The max cutting depth turned out to be 3-1/4″, not 3-1/8″ as Bosch specs indicated. That’s right about average for a 10″ table saw, though there are a few saws on the market that measure up to 3-1/2″ and can cut through a 4×4 post if needed (though I can’t imagine why you’d want to do that).

Conclusion

After cutting a bunch of wood with this saw, we really liked the balance of power and portability of Bosch GTS1031 – and I think that’s what this saw is all about. For raw Performance, the unflappable motor-blade combo earned a stiff 8/10 in our tests, while its affordable $399 price tag put it at a solid 9/10 in our Value scale. Sure, you can get cheaper portable table saws, but you’ll find it a challenge to track down the combination of power and portability the Bosch GTS1031 offers.

The Bosch gravity rise-equipped 4100-09 remains a compelling alternative for those wanting an integrated stand. It occupies an additional 15″ in width and 8″ in length and is a full 3.5″ taller. But it only tacks on 8 pounds in weight. If you’re cutting larger pieces of wood or need a saw with a stand, the 4100-09 may be your baby. The new Bosch GTS1031, however, with its “toss it in the truck” form factor, remains our new sweetheart tool. While it has an available GTA500 folding table stand accessory, the real advantage of this saw is its stand-free portability. Don’t make it into something it’s not. After using this tool, we think you’ll want to take it with you, as-is, just about everywhere!
