At $100 retail, the Wolverine Cameron hooded jacket is a no-brainer to put on your short list. This jacket is warm and comfortable and has a lot of features we really like. We woudl like to see bigger zippers in future models (though the main zipper isn't too bad) and it would be nice to know that a Medium isn't an XXL—makes us wonder what the XXL is really like.

Overall Score 8.0 (out of 10)

I don’t really like duck. I find it greasy and often strong in taste… But duck fabric I am a big fan of. It’s extremely durable as seen in its use in shoes, oil canvases and the like. Wolverine decided to make its new Cameron hooded jacket with 100 percent cotton duck material on the exterior (where you want it). Typically, duck fabric is woven together with two yarns in the warp and one yarn in the weft. The material used in the Cameron is a thick (12 oz.) material that is then lined with 3M Thinsulate insulation with a quilted polyester taffeta to keep you both comfortable and warm. That’s a lot of terminology for a jacket, but there’s a lot packed into this thing. The bottom line is that water and dirt run off it and you stay warm. Plus it’s really easy to get on and off.

Features We Really Liked

Cameron jacket pencil pocketOn the outside, the pockets of the Wolverine Cameron Hooded Jacket are deep and easily accessible. They’re also all reinforced with rivets to make sure they can take a lot of weight and use without allowing the stitching to pull away from the main fabric. I liked that the primary hand pockets don’t use zippers, so you can get your hands in easily—even if you’re wearing gloves as is typically the case. Then, Wolverine added more pockets, like the vertical zippered side pocket on the left breast that’s perfect for sunglasses or your phone. The zippers are way too small and difficult to use with gloves, but they look like they’ll hold up to the weather. There is a nice pencil pocket that sits atop another pocket within the left-side hand pocket. It’s perfect for your carpenters’ pencils and/or utility knife. The hoodie is also well-designed, with durable drawstrings and a shape that lets it lay nicely against your back when not being used.

Interior pockets exist on the left and right of the Wolverine Cameron Hooded Jacket with the left one being zippered and the right having a small Velcro closure. The jacket has a really nice range of motion and it’s amazing how thick it is, how well it insulates, and yet how lightweight and unrestrictive it feels when you wear it. The stitching is excellent on this jacket and the Duralock means it will resist water and oil (we didn’t have the heart to test it with oil, but the water ran off it like a…well, like a duck’s back.

Wearing It and Conclusion

One thing we have to mention is that it turns out the “Medium” Wolverine Cameron Hooded Jacket that came in the mail was about the size of any XL we’ve ever seen. As a result, I got the task of putting the coat on some other people and interviewing them from the outside to see what they thought. One of my reviewers happens to be renovating an old single-story home, and so it was a great opportunity for him to get some use out of this jacket while we had some colder weather, and I needed both warmth and maneuverability. I had it on at least three people in teh course of this review, so it got a lot of use and feedback. Based on our sizing issues, we’d recommend you try this jacket on the make sure its going to fit you well before picking one up. Wolverine does offer a 30-day “comfort” guarantee, so the good news is that you can return it if needed. The Cameron hooded jacket is available in Charcoal, Bison and Whiskey in men’s sizes from Medium (we hope) to XXL.
