There are times working on the inside that I wished I had a tool lighter than the 20v. I am not trying to install huge lag bolts or drill through studs, and sometimes the 20v almost has to much power. The 12v drive feels substantially lighter than the 20v when paired with equal ah batteries. In actuality the 12v is just 5 ounces less than the 20v, but the battery loses another 5 ounces...that is over a half pound and is significant when considering with battery it drops from nearly 3 lbs to just 2 1/4 lbs.
Weight is one thing, but does performance suffer? The answer is dependent on the use...build a deck with a 12v? Absolutely not...mount light fixtures with a 12v? Absolutely.
When I am doing a one-off project like installing a light fixture or ceiling fan, I don’t usually bring my whole kit- just a few tools. I have noticed over the last 18 months that i consciously look for this tool over all the other drill/drivers and the impact drivers I own. This tool aside from a variable speed trigger has three operating modes. The lowest mode pretty much turns this into an electric screwdriver, to the highest which packs a quite punch.
In the lowest mode and lightly squeezing the variable speed trigger allows for a very slow rotation of the bit — nothing gets over torqued/tightened and no heads get stripped. The other impressive thing is the the LED lights, I may notice it on this tool, but inwas hanging a series of curtain rods and realized my headlight had gone out but didn’t need it because of the brightness of this light.
I am very impressed with the 12v impact driver. To use a hammer analogy, you don’t want a framing hammer when you are nailing trim. While either will work, each hammer plays an important role. I see the two drivers in a similar light.
Finally just for comparison I weighed a makita driver and found it right in the middle of the two dewalt tools, but again the makita 18v 2ah battery weighs slightly more than the Dewalt 20v. I haven’t done any runtime comparisons because I don’t think it is as important or even relevant. If you are driving screws all day, the 12v is not going to be your first choice, but if you need to drill a few holes and drive a few screws while installing something...the 12v is superior.
All in all if you need something for around the house (almost like an electric screwdriver) the 12v is perfect and allows the use of a wide range of attachments. If you are more into projects, the 12v may be a good second tool but I am not sure I would want it as a primary tool.

The product is great. Since it's so compact and light, it's my go-to for just about any job, especially when up on a ladder or when carrying multiple things. Love it!
