The look - sleek, awesome, and practical. It feels nice to write with: it's overall purpose. Feels the same weight as the CRKT when I held both. It's not too heavy nor light. For it's tactical purpose, it also feels right when held defensively. The divets feel good to hold, with or without the cap. The tactical purpose is upheld without the cap, just maybe different techniques if you look up "pocket sticks". I share criticisms of the logos being emblazoned on it, but only someone really looking would catch it, and there's ways to get it off.
The design - the thing that annoyed me with the CRKT was the clip. It angles sharply up and jabs your finger when held defensively. The place you hold to write felt too fat and a lot of writing cramped your hand. This S&W is comfortable on all those fronts. I don't feel the need to flatten the clip, in a real scenario I don't think it's that important for this pen; but have seen where it matters with others.
The cap - screws on and off. I personally really like this. It stays secure without worrying about it falling off and going missing. As far as ink drying up from doing this for long periods: I can get away with this as I replaced the ink, more on that below. CRKT had the stick on cap approach figured out well; the design lent itself to that. An earlier version of this S&W pen had a poor design and the cap fell off easily. This pen's solution was screwing on and I just like it more for either practical or tactical reasons. It doesn't take a lot of turning to get on or off and it stays very snug without tightening very hard. The threads are also very thick, so I'm not worried about grounding them off or loosening over time.
The ink: it's a regular ink cartridge. It does fine. People who don't like it have a ton of replacement options as it's a standard cartridge. I don't know about now, but at the time the CRKT came with a fisher ink cartridge. I have a need for these because I often write in sub-zero freezing temperatures. Rarely do they require scribbling to get the ink going. Outside of these pros, fewer people actually need to buy a $10 dollar cartridge, they're the only reasons I buy them, as really I prefer very fine pens. But even with daily use, fishers last a long time. Concerning this S&W, they're a perfect fit. I was intrigued by some other pens but not a fan of stubby or proprietary cartridges to allow for flashlights, OTF pressure points, or other features.
I mostly write with it nore than anything. I don't share concerns about the tactical end, it will serve it's purpose. In other words, it's pointy enough. The CRKT actually comes flat there but I didn't worry about that one either. The design is well thought out where I don't feel anything is lacking especially for the price. There are more expensive pens that would only do the same thing. This thing just delivers.
Now as a self defense tool. (The point are the end is NOT a glass breaker. It’s made of aluminum, not steel) I don’t have experience using it in self defense, but it seems like a great secondary option. I’m a college student, and we can’t have knives, so this and pepper spray is my usual EDC. I also have a Smith and Wesson baton, but it’s less comfortable and convenient to carry. I do know it will stand up to some abuse. It’s been dropped and bumped and scraped against a ton of stuff, and it’s still solid. It is showing wear. The anodization on the aluminum shaft has been scraped and dented through in some places, and the paint on the steel pocket clip and its screws is wearing off, but that’s nothing I wouldn't expect after over a year of EDC. The shape allows for a comfortable and stable ice pick grip with the thumb over the top of the cap, and the clip doesn’t get in the way for me. Just remember, this was not meant to be your primary or only line of defense, and it will only protect you to the extent that you know how to use it. Get self defense training if you can.
Overall, I would highly recommend adding this to your EDC. Definitely worth the money. Only reason it’s not five stars is because the ink cartridge can be improved, though it’s not necessary. The stock one is adequate and functional. Everyone needs a pen, and everyone should be prepared to defend themselves. Just remember, this was not meant to be your primary or only line of defense, and it will only protect you to the extent that you know how to use it. Get self defense training if you can.
