Discover Your Skills with Mike Rowe

At Pro Tool Reviews, we’re all about the tradesman. Going to college is great, but the country seems to have drifted down a dangerous path where white collar jobs are somehow “better” than their blue collar counterparts. We respectfully disagree. Learning and growing great at a trade is not only a worthwhile way to contribute to society, it’s also intensely fulfilling and absolutely necessary for the good of our country. Without tradesmen, the USA will grind to a complete and dismal halt. Recently, Mike Rowe got behind the Discovery Channel’s push towards elevating the role of the tradesman with a PSA of their new website: discoveryourskills.com. The Discover Your Skills with Mike Rowe website looks very promising.

So what is DiscoverYourSkills.com? It’s a website designed to disclose, encourage and promote the trades. Regardless of whether you happen to be coming fresh out of high school, or if you need to switch careers in this economy, there are literally hundreds of thousands of skilled jobs waiting to be filled.

Seriously, the trades have been all but decimated, and not only is it personally fulfilling to grow into a skilled trade – it’s downright profitable. To succeed you need to learn the skills and get the training employers are looking for in new hires. It’s a process that Discover Your Skills aims to help with. The site will tackle general questions about career, education and training options, to showing videos that inspire and show off various industries.

We need more tradesmen in this country. The population of highly-skilled plumbers, electricians, retailers, carpenters, hospitality workers and more are dwindling with the increasing age of the existing workforce. This is going to be one of the hottest growth areas in the future as more and more people exit these industries and leave gaps which need to be filled. If Discover Your Skills with Mike Rowe helps, then we’re a full supporter.

And, of course, checking out Mike Rowe’s show Dirty Jobs will expose you to tons of these trades and hopefully encourage you to see the value and importance of real hands-on hard work. Rock, on, Mike, thanks for doing your part to keep waving the banner.
