Ridgid 18V Compact Band Saw R8604B

Ridgid 18V Compact Band Saw R8604B

Ridgid Drops Size of 18V Band Saw for Better Accessibility

In fall 2020, Home Depot will launch the Ridgid 18V compact band saw. This new cordless band saw promises a new tool targeting electricians and MRO professionals already on the Ridgid 18V platform. We’ve certainly seen similar designs from other manufacturers, however, Ridgid users have thus far had to reach for alternate solutions. Before this, the only Ridgid band saw we know of cuts vertically and is most certainly not portable!

10-Second Summary

  • Model: Ridgid R8604B
  • 2-1/2 in. cutting capacity
  • Variable speed dial
  • Ergonomic design
  • Rafter hook
  • Available Fall 2020

Ridgid Compact Cordless Band Saw Features

Though compact, Ridgid designed the 18V cordless band saw for two-handed use. The saw makes up for it with a 2-1/2 cutting capacity. Compare that to the one-handed sub-compact Milwaukee M12 FUEL bandsaw’s 1-5/8 in. of clearance. Blending a compact size with a good amount of clearance means the Ridgid R8604B should handle a wide variety of applications.

The diminutive size of the Ridgid R8604B lends the tool to excellent ergonomics and control. Beyond that, however, the compact band saw features a variable speed dial. We like that feature since it allows for better control when cutting through a variety of metals and materials. When you use the correct cutting speed, you actually work faster and eat up fewer blades.

Comfort and Convenience

Finally, when looking at the Ridgid compact cordless bandsaw, we really like the continued use of their signature Hex Grip. It provides a nice secure grip on both the front and rear handles. The 18V bandsaw also comes with a rafter hook, so you can easily hang it within reach.

Blade changes look simple, thanks to a tool-free tension release lever. We also couldn’t help but notice the flexible plastic shrouds around the blade. That should provide some protection against bumps and drops.

Ridgid R8604B Final Thoughts

We expect the Ridgid 18V compact band saw to hit stores in the Fall of 2020. The company has yet to release official pricing, but we can add that as soon as we get it.

However, we can tell you that the R8604B, like all of the tools in Ridgid’s 18V lineup, will come with a Lifetime Service Agreement. That means, as long as you register the saw within the first 90 days after purchase, you can bring it in for free servicing whenever you experience a problem.
