Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

Ryobi 18V Cordless Sliding Miter Saw | PBT01B

Ryobi Miter Saw

Ryobi Sliding Miter Saw Provides Best 2×10 Cross Cut Capacity

Ryobi has extended their line of cordless miter saw options, upgrading their offerings to include an 18V cordless sliding miter saw. The Ryobi PBT01B has increased crosscutting capacity and now handles a 2×10 at 90-degrees and a 2×6 at a 45-degree miter. All this with a standard 7-1/4″ blade!

Ryobi PBT01B Cordless Sliding Miter Saw Cut Capacity

The big deal about the Ryobi PBT01B cordless sliding miter saw really is the sliding feature. It greatly increases the cut capacity over the Ryobi P553 18V miter saw. The sliding saw tackles cross cuts in up to 2×10 boards, but it also gives users a cut capacity useful for miter cuts. The sliding rails let the 7-1/4″ blade make cuts through 2×6 lumber at a 45º angle.

Ryobi Miter Saw

The cordless 18V Ryobi sliding miter saw has 10 precision miter detents (with bypass) for accuracy. You’ve got your stops in the traditional locations, both left and right: 0º, 15º, 22.5º, 31.6º, and 45º. You can also make miter cuts up to 47º left and right as well.

As far as we know, the Ryobi Sliding Miter Saw won’t be replacing the P553 18V compound miter saw, but providing an alternative single bevel miter saw with a sliding option.

The older P553 does look like it has some advantages over this newer model though. It’s a bit faster, and it looks like it can run for almost twice as long on a charge from the P194 9.0Ah High Performance battery (though whether the number of cuts is calculated by the size of the board the saw can actually handle is not information we’ve been made privy to).

The Ryobi PBT01B Sliding Miter Saw will also cost you about $50 more than the older model as well.

Our Take

With the updated Ryobi PBT01B, you now have the ability to make cross cuts in 2x10s. The cordless P553 doesn’t come anywhere near that. In fact, the non-sliding single-bevel cordless miter saw can’t actually tackle a 45º miter cut in a 2×4. That limits its usefulness somewhat. This saw provides that increased capacity and then some—a welcome addition.

We also love that using the 9Ah HP battery provides an excellent amount of runtime per Ryobi. If it gets anywhere near the stated 500 crosscuts per charge you have an all-day tool perfect for trimming and even small build and repair projects.

Finally, at $199 for the bare tool you can have a cordless miter saw for just $10 more than you pay for the corded model. That. Is. Insane. The 9Ah battery should deliver more power and runtime, but even if you already have some 5Ah battery packs you can grab this tool and get started. At this price, how can you resist?
