Makita RJ01W 12V Max Recipro Saw Kit Preview

Earlier this week we spied out some of Makita’s new 12V tools that had made it to the UK market and wondered how quickly, if ever, they would make it to our shores. Turns out the first product didn’t take very long. Makita just released its new Makita 12V Max Lithium-Ion Recipro Saw Kit (model RJ01W). This is a new one-handed reciprocating saw that gives you power in a compact package to accomplish all sorts of tasks. What’s more, Makita is also offering the new saw as part of a 2-piece combo kit (model LCT212W) where it’s bundled with a 12V max Lithium-Ion 3/8″ Driver-Drill.

New Makita 12V Compact Tools on the Horizon

While what Makita is doing in the UK may not reflect a direct transfer to the tools is releases in the US, it does perk us up to see a suite of new 10.8V (that’s 12V to you and me) cordless lithium-ion tools come out of nowhere. In particular, a new jigsaw, reciprocating saw, tile cutter and even a compact site radio, have joined a line-up which already includes drill drivers, an impact driver, an impact wrench, an 3-3/8″ circular saw and vacuum cleaner. In the U, the range also includes the ‘Pink Drill’, the special edition 12V drill driver marketed to support the Breast Cancer Care charity with a donation from Makita for every unit sold (though in the US they merely dressed up their 2011 Supercross sponsor in pink, not their drill).

Bosch doesn’t like leaving things alone – and it rarely considers anything “good enough”. That’s apparently what happened when they developed the new PS11-2A 3/8″ Angled Drill. Bosch took their existing 12V Max I-Driver and mated it with the chuck of their newest PS31-2A 3/8″ 12V Drill/Driver. Now you get a 3/8″ drill that has a 5-position articulating head. The adjustable head allows the standard keyless chuck to move from 90 degrees to 180 degrees in 5-steps, providing almost limitless flexibility for when you find yourself working in close quarters.

Rockwell RK1001K2 12V Drill & Impact Driver Combo Kit Review

Rockwell RK1001K2 12V Drill and Impact Driver Combo Kit Review

In our testing and review of the Rockwell RK1001K2 12V Drill & Impact Driver Combo Kit, we found it to offer a good combination of both value and performance. With a myriad of different manufacturers coming out with 12V lithium-ion powered cordless tools it can be hard to determine what ones are the best to pick. If you are on the market for a 12V lithium-ion combo set, we think that the Rockwell RK1001K2 Drill and Impact Driver Combo Kit is worth a look. These tools offer performance that is comparable to many leading brands and, as a bonus, they come with a full three year warranty and a program where they offer free replacement batteries for life if you register your tools.

Makita LCT307W 12V Cordless Combo Kit Review

Makita LCT307W 12V Cordless Combo Kit Review

The Makita LCT307W 12V Cordless Combo Kit contains some very light and compact tools. Compared with typical competing portable drills, the included FD01W measures only 6 inches from hex chuck to back – and the DT01W Impact Driver is nearly the same. This really makes these Makita tools much more accessible to tight spaces. On both tools, the built-in LED light illuminates with just a touch of the trigger and proved to be very bright and helpful. Under our test conditions where we intentionally worked in tight (and thus dark) quarters, both the Makita Driver-Drill and Impact Driver were great tools.

Black & Decker LDX112C 12V Max Lithium Drill/Driver Review

Black and Decker LDX112C 12V Max Lithium Drill/Driver Review

Seeing how just about everyone else has a compact 12V lithium-ion powered line of power tools, Black & Decker jumped on board with their value-targeted LDX112C 12V Max Lithium Drill/Driver. Using what has become an industry standard format for the battery style, they opted for a slightly different approach to its integration into the handle of the tool. The front load style actually makes it so that the drill can stand on its own and offer pretty good balance. This little drill has most of what we have come to expect from this type of tool – like an integrated LED worklight, rubber over-molded grips, and variable speed trigger. What actually surprised us was the metal gear box and 3/8″ metal chuck which seemed like nice touches on a value priced tool. The Black & Decker LDX112C 12V Max Lithium Drill/Driver comes in a cardboard box that includes a battery, charger, and a bi-sided driving bit. Sorry, but only one battery is included and there is no nifty carry case. But given its pretty small size, it could easily live in the junk drawer in your kitchen. Come on, admit it, you might not call it a junk drawer, but everyone has one. Its that central drawer in your kitchen or office that houses all the odds and ends that don’t seem to belong or fit elsewhere. It is the first place you will look for masking tape, screws, tacks, candles and a host of other necessities (yes, I too have one) – and what better place than to store this handy little drill/driver.
