The Dee Zee Padlock Tool Box line for pickups is available in several styles with features designed for convenience as well as security. The crossover style spans the truck bed and rests on both panels, the side mount style rests on one panel, and the utility chest rests in side the bed but is made to be moved to the jobsite.
Both the crossover and utility chest have locking mechanisms on the side which feature heavy-duty striker bolts latched with a patented slide mechanism. The chest lid closes with a single moving part, eliminating weak welded points. An automotive grade rubber bulb seal wraps the undercarriage of the lid. The crossover style also has a customizable steel tool tray.
The Bolt Padlock can be used on all Dee Zee Padlock Tool Box styles. It’s built out of zinc-chrome plated 5/16-inch hardened steel with 6 plate tumbler sidebar and allows the user to customize locks to work with the vehicle’s ignition key. When the ignition key is inserted into the Bolt padlock, the padlock mechanically learns the key code.
Our Take
Dee Zee went with 20% thicker aluminum for the construction of their latest boxes along with a single moving part slide mechanism. The combination of that and heavy-duty striker bolts make the Dee Zee Padlock Tool Box series incredibly tough to break into compared to other models, including ones from Dee Zee.
In today’s world, everyone is concerned about tool theft. On paper, it sure looks like Dee Zee has done some things well in the Padlock series’ design. They’ve also added elements like their automotive grade rubber bulb lid seal to keep out moisture that has a tendency to claim the lives of our tools. That makes you wonder why you wouldn’t use automotive grade seals for something that’s going on your truck, but it happens.
As you’d expect, there’s a premium for going with black over chrome. The quality and security offered by Dee Zee means you’re paying more than you would for the bargain brands (no surprise there). You can sleep a little better knowing that your tools are more secure and you’ve put Americans to work since these are Made in the USA products.
