Dremel MM40-01 Multi-Max Oscillating Tool Kit Preview

Having reviewed the popular (for good reason) Dremel Multi-Max 6300 Oscillating Tool last year and it really became one of our go-to tools for undercutting, cutting in electrical boxes and various other task for which a multi-tool is perfectly suited. Because Dremel was first to market following the release of the Fein patent, its accessories are very popular and found in just about any hardware store or home improvement warehouse. Even with all that behind it, we thought we were pretty much at the end of the Dremel story. I mean, they have both a corded and cordless model – so what else is there? Apparently more power. The company has tweaked their Multi-Max 6300 corded tool into two brand new models. Today we’re taking a sneak peek at the new MM40-01 Oscillating Tool Kit – paying particular attention to their new tool-less blade change.

We reviewed the popular (for good reason) Dremel Multi-Max 6300 oscillating tool last year, and it really became one of our go-to tools for undercutting, cutting in electrical boxes and various other task for which a multi-tool is perfectly suited. Dremel is a company that doesn’t seem to stop moving. Once known for making excellent rotary tools, now they are building their reputation as a manufacturer of proficient and adept multi-tools. The Multi-Max has a simplistic style that we like, but adding a new tool-less accessory change is making it even more desirable as a tool. Enter the MM40, a beefed-up version of the original Multi-Max that amps up the power (literally to 2.3 amps) and makes it even easier to use. Perfect – and just in time for Christmas.

Dremel MM40-01 Oscillating Tool Kit Features

What’s exciting about this tool is the new Quick Lock accessory change system which lets you rotate a lever on the top of the tool in order to switch between accessories. There’s no need for a hex wrench (which tends to get misplaced) and the time it takes to put in the a new blade is so negligible, you actually stand a better chance of, you know, actually using the right blade for the right application. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used a metal blade on wood or drywall simply because I was too lazy to swap it out. The Quick Lock changes all that. Also, with Dremel’s slotted blades and accessories, you get the feeling they were thinking ahead with this design – and it really works well. We thought changing blades and accessories was fast before – now it’s super quick.

The MM40-01 kit includes an MM480 Wood Flush Cut Blade, MM482 Wood and Metal Flush Cut Blade, MM450 Wood and Drywall Blade, MM11 Hook and Loop Pad, ten MM70W Sanding sheets, five MM70P Sanding sheets and an MM600 Rigid Scraper Blade. It also comes nicely packaged in a black blow mold case.

The MM40 retains its ergonomic shape and isn’t much larger than the original 6300, so it still feels great in your hand. It weighs around 2 pounds and a separate on/off switch keeps you from having to re-dial the speed each time you turn on the tool. The Multi-Max MM40’s adjustable oscillating speed goes from 10,000-21,000 RPMs using the 10-position rotary dial. Higher speeds are perfect for cutting drywall and wood, not to mention specialized tasks like grout removal. The lower speeds come in handy for scraping and sanding jobs.

The updated MM40 multi-tool uses the same, familiar (and well-stocked and popular) 12-pin QuickFit slot accessories that enable a quick and easy fit to the tool – particularly with the tool-less accessory changing system.
