DeWalt DCS551 20V Max Drywall Cutout Tool

DeWalt DCS551

The DeWalt DCS551 20 Volt Max Drywall Cutout Tool is a vast improvement over the previous 18 volt model. For starters, the new cutout tool is designed and kitted to take advantage of the 20 Volt Max 2.0 amp hour lithium-ion battery packs. The former DC550KA kit came with 2.2 amp hour nickle-cadmium batteries. With a significant thanks to the new battery, the weight has been reduced as well. It’s now 3.1 pounds, which DeWalt tells us is roughly 30% lighter.

For performance, the DeWalt DCS551 delivers 26,000 RPMs. In addition to drywall, it should also be able to cut through acoustical ceiling tiles and plywood. The integrated LED light helps illuminate darker work areas. A dust sealed switch, high impact housing material, and ball bearing spindle construction are all designed to improve durability.

Of course, most of us know the value of having a good cutout tool. The ability to make a small plunge cut then trace around where we need a hole is undeniably convenient. For those of us that use these tools, having a cordless option to turn to is fantastic. If you don’t own one, I’m sure that you’ve probably comes across at least one time when you wish you did. If you already own DeWalt batteries, considering this as an addition your tool bag makes the choice a little easier.

The DeWalt DCS551 is available in two different packages. Model DCS551B (MSRP $129) is the bare tool kit. The DCS551D2 (MSRP $199) includes the tool plus a pair of 2.0 amp hour 20V XR lithium-ion battery packs. Both options include 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch collets and will be found anywhere that DeWalt tools are sold. The new Cutout Tool is backed with DeWalt’s standard 3-year limited warranty, 1 year service agreement, and 90 day money-back guarantee.
