Let There Be Light!

The big deal is obviously the LED lights that Weather Guard is putting in their 127 aluminum saddle box. It’s a total of 600 lumens with a wide throw to help you see what’s in your truck box. They mount to the back of the box rather than the lid.

The LEDs are rated for 20,000 hours of life and are IP66 rated so they can deal with jobsite environments.

Weather Guard Light Truck Box LEDs run off the power from your truck instead of a separate battery. It uses contactless magnets to automatically turn the lights on and off as you open or close the lid.

30-Minute DIY Installation

With just a little bit of wiring knowledge, Weather Guard tells us that installation is just a half-hour commitment. The easiest method taps into the wiring around your trailer hitch. You won’t need to do any splicing since the connectors are already in place. Just zip tie the harness down the frame and up to the box between the bed and cab before making the final connection inside the box.

There’s also a fuse box installation that’s similar.

Upgrade Kits for Standard Weather Guard 127 Saddle Boxes

There are upgrade kits available for standard 127 saddle boxes as well. Just order the correct wiring model for your truck and choose black or silver to match your box. From there, you install the light panel using nuts and bolts that are already on your truck box.

Self-tapping screws help you install the magnet bracket in place on the bottom lid channel.

Upgrade kits have a $179 MSRP.

Update – We’ve Got it Installed!

Truck Box Installation

There aren’t any surprises installing the truck box itself. Weather Guard gives you rubber strips to lay down between the box and the bed so you don’t scratch your paint. Any pocket knife is sufficient to cut the extra material off.

Many budget boxes use a single nut and hook to hold the box to the bed and it kind of hangs at an angle. It’s a little thing, but Weather Guard’s attachment assembly has a slot that lets you tighten the nut and washer down directly above the hook. It also uses 2 hooks on each side instead of one, so it’s a much more secure connection.

Wiring Hookup

I’m no electrician and tend to shy away from any kind of vehicle wiring, but this was almost too easy. We went for the hitch intercept installation and the harness for Luke’s Chevy Silverado is a flawless fit.

From there, we followed the existing wiring instead of attaching it to the lower frame, but you can go either way.

Once you get to the end of the bed, loop the wiring between the bed and the cab and come over the bed behind the box. A quick cut through the knockout grommet and it connects to the box on the inside. If you happen to have a way into the bed from underneath, you can use. However, once you tighten the box down, you really have to look to see the wiring coming up, so it’s not an issue aesthetically.

Just push the wiring inside the box above the where you connect it on the inside and you’re ready for light!

Can You Really Install it in 30 Minutes?

Yes! We took an hour since I needed photos and video along the way. I’m pretty confident that even a novice can get it done properly after watching the installation video on their site.

Let There Be Light!

6 banks of LEDs light the truck from the middle of the box. They point out and down, lighting the inside of the box rather than wasting any light energy up.

600 lumens is plenty to see around the entire box and there aren’t many dark corners to hide in. When they exist, it’s because the organizer is blocking some light and it’s easy enough to slide out of the way.

The lights come up almost as soon as the lid starts lifting. As advertised, it’s completely automatic, so there’s nothing to think about turning on or off. And since the lights are LED, there’s very little drain on your truck’s battery.

A Few Notes About the Model 127 Box

Sliding Organizer

There are two things I really like about the organizer tray – you can move the inner walls and it clips to either side. It adds a level of customization and security that’s a step up compared to other brands.

Security

Weather Guard calls it an Extreme Protection Lock, I call it well-designed security for your truck box. It’s tamper-resistant and retracts when you lock it, making it much tougher to break into.

When you unlock it, the lock pops out and a simple press opens the lid a full 90º.

Attachment Points

Living on a farm and hauling around the gear and equipment we do means we use our truck bed attachment points more than most. Losing two of them to install a truck box makes a difference.

Weather Guard Lighted Truck Box

The Weather Guard Lighted Truck Box has 2 heavy duty D-rings to clip to. Since the box attaches with 4 hooks instead of 2, that more secure installation relieves some worry about the load shifting.

Matte Black Finish

I LOVE the matte black powder coated finish! Glossy looks good for a show, but matte looks like it’s here to work. Weather Guard uses what they call Armor-Tuf powder coating that should last a lot longer than any of the bargain brands.

Closure

I notice that it takes a little extra effort to close the lid in these early weeks. I expect it will get easier as the weather seal breaks in.

Price

The Weather Guard Lighted Truck Box has a quality build and has the advantage of LED lighting, so it’s no surprise that it also has a premium price tag. MSRP for either black or silver is $1075. There’s really not much competition in the lighted truck box space, but the Model 127 truck box on its own runs a little south of $800.

Is it worth an extra $225?

We think so, but ask yourself the same question the next time you’re digging around yours with a flashlight.

The Bottom Line

Weather Guard is the first to pull off an out-of-the-box lighted truck box and it’s clear the product team put a lot of thought into the design. It has a better fit, finish, and function than many first-generation products we see.

Realistically, the Weather Guard Lighted Truck Box makes the most sense for guys and gals who still have work to do once the sun goes down. It’s certainly convenient (and cool!) for any full-size truck owner, though.
