Construction
Starting at the top, HH utilizes a hybrid leather and rip-stop polyester for the upper. This combination is very durable and breathable, and helps keep your feet well ventilated on those hot summer days.
As this is Helly Hansen’s first foray into work boots, the team opted for a cement construction to attach the rubber outsole, which offers high flexibility right out of the box. On top of that, these boots are very lightweight compared to Goodyear-welted boots.
The HellyGrip rubber outsole features a shallow, hiker-style lug pattern. The lugs are spaced out nicely so dirt and other debris can fall away easily, but they’re not so aggressive as to be uncomfortable on hard, flat surfaces. Additionally, a series of ridges towards the front of the sole provides extra traction when walking on loose or inclined surfaces.
Another feature I enjoy is the protective toe and heel caps. This is something we’re seeing more and more on modern work boots, and I think it’s a smart choice. The rubber toe cap helps protect the upper from scuffs and wear while kneeling. As silly as this might sound, the heel caps protrude slightly, and I found them easier to kick off at the end of the day.
Fit and Comfort
When it comes to boots, I wear a size 11 regular. In terms of the fit, the Oslo’s were spot on. There is plenty of room in the toe box to accommodate thicker socks, and the width felt snug, but not cramped. While the fit was good, another factor caught my attention first.
Right out of the box, the first thing I noticed was the weight—or lack thereof! These boots weigh 1.3 pounds each, which is an astounding feat for a work boot.
To put that into perspective, the last two pairs of cement construction work boots I reviewed clocked in around 2 pounds each. Furthermore, my everyday Nike athletic shoes are 11.6 ounces each. So Helly Hansen has really done something incredible, finding an amazing middle ground that balances durability and weight.
Along with the lightweight design, these boots are very flexible. This is a byproduct of the construction style. While direct-attach and Goodyear welted methods create stronger bonds between the upper and outsole, few designs match the immediate, out-of-the-box comfort of cement-constructed work boots.

Should You Buy Them?
The Helly Hansen Oslo Hiker Mid takes a different approach than most work boots, and for the right folks, it pays off.
It’s incredibly lightweight, surprisingly flexible, and immediately comfortable—qualities I’ve found to be uncommon in a category often dominated by stiff, heavy designs. The hybrid upper, versatile lug pattern, and protective toe and heel caps all contribute to a boot that feels just as at home on uneven terrain as it does on a jobsite.
With that said, this isn’t built to replace the toughest, most rugged work boots out there. Instead, it fills a growing niche for workers who prioritize mobility, comfort, and reduced fatigue over maximum durability.
