Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

DeWalt 5-inch Random Orbit Sanders

DeWalt 5-in. Single Speed Random Orbit Sander (DW6421) - DeWalt Random Orbit Sander

Recently, DeWalt announced a new addition to their woodworking products line. The latest DeWalt Random Orbit Sander features two variations. The DWE6421 is a single speed while the DeWalt DWE6423K has a variable speed motor. The single-speed is the new kid on the block while the variable speed model came out earlier this year. Aside from that difference, they’re pretty much twins.

Both weigh 2.9 pounds and take a 5″ hook and loop sanding pad. As part of DeWalt’s Perform and Protect line of power tools, the new sanders offer reduced vibration characteristics. This is achieved through an internal counterweight system.

Ergonomics and Dust Collection

The newest DeWalt Random Orbit Sander stands at 5-1/2 inches (140 mm) tall, giving users the advantage to get closer to the sanding surface. Like it’s recent brother, the new sander features a rubber overmold, a rubber dust skirt, and a dust bag with a one-hand locking system. Dewalt’s Universal Connector System will get you attached to your dust extractor so you can reduce the amount of airborne dust.

The DeWalt 5” Single Speed Random Orbit Sander features a 3.0 amp motor that spins the pad at 12,000 OPM on a 3/32” orbit diameter. If the variable speed model is more of what you’re looking for, you’ll get a range of 8,000 – 12,000 OPM. Either way, this makes the random orbit sander suitable for a variety of sanding applications. This sander is rated to work on many surfaces including wood, metal, and fiberglass.

The 5” Single Speed Random Orbit Sander (DWE6421) retails for $59. Bumping up to variable speed comes with a $20 premium to make it $79. Both come with a 3-year limited warranty, 90-day money-back guarantee, and 1-year free service contract.
