Hilti Nuron Cordless Cut-Off Tool Tweaks Design, Drops Weight

The Hilti Nuron cordless cut-off tool isn’t the brand’s first model. Before switching focus to the Nuron system, the previous version was (and still is) and high-performing cut-out tool that leaves others in the drywall dust. We decided to take a deeper dive into the SCO 6-22 and see what’s changing.

Hilti Nuron Cordless Cut-Out Tool Performance

There wasn’t much to complain about on the performance end of Hilti’s previous cut-out tool. Its brushless motor turned out 30,000 RPMs to make quick work of drywall cut-out along with a handful of other materials. In that regard, there’s no change for the Nuron version. It’s still a beefy design with more muscle than some of the more diminutive options on the market.

Here are some other applications the SCO 6-22 is capable of handling:

  • Thin metal cutting such as steel studs and ducts
  • Cement board (HardieBoard)
  • Sure-Board sheathing
  • Other abuse-resistant boards

There are more advantages to shifting over to the Nuron system, especially for larger construction firms. In addition to powering the full range of tools from drills to 12-inch power cutters on one battery system, you get higher power output, diagnostic data, and even location information to help you keep track of your tools. Size and Weight

Hilti SCO 6-22

Compared to many of the cordless cut-out tools on the market, Hilti’s is larger. It’s 12.5 inches long without a battery. On its own, it weighs 2.9 pounds and the 2.5Ah Nuron battery puts the total at 4.2 pounds.

However, that’s an improvement over the previous version. It was slightly longer (12.8 inches) and weighed 4.2 pounds before you added a battery to it. Keeping the same performance with that kind of weight reduction is impressive.

Physical Design

Hilti Nuron Cordless Cut-Out Tool

The big physical change from the last model to this one is at the back. Instead of angling the battery, it’s now perpendicular to the main body and can stand up.

The rest of the tool doesn’t change much. An overmold layer covers the top, adding better grip and more comfort. The grip section has more contour than the traditional circular barrel grip designs. Even the paddle switch is pretty much the same, offering tool activation no matter where you prefer to grip it and acting as a dead man switch if you accidentally drop it.

Bit Changes

Hilti SCO 6-22 Bit Changes

Hilti sticks with tradition for bit changes. Press in the collet lock button to the right of the collet and tighten/loosen with the wrench that comes in the box. While 1/8-inch bits are the most common we use, there are adapters for that size plus 5/16 and 1/4-inch bits.

The only downside is that there’s no onboard storage for the wrench and adapters. That’s not unusual for cut-out tools, though. We just keep ours in the bag they came in and store them in the same bag as the tool so we have them when we need them.

Additional Highlights

  • Twin LED lights above and below the collet
  • Includes adjustable depth gauge
  • Optional vacuum adapter available
  • Includes collet adapters for 1/8, 5/16, and 1/4-inch cut-out bits
  • Compatible with Hilti retaining strap and tether

Hilti Nuron Cordless Cut-Out Tool Price

As usual, the best place to buy the Hilti SCO 6-22 is direct from their website or your local rep. As a bare tool, it’s $214—$25 less than the previous model.

Pair it with a 2.5Ah battery ($84 each) for the best overall weight or the 4.0Ah pack ($114 each) to improve your runtime without making the tool too bulky. The other Nuron batteries are also compatible, but we don’t recommend them with this tool due to the size and weight.

Hilti has a 20-2-1 warranty and service program. The tool has a 20-year warranty with a 2-year service agreement, and a 1-day turnaround on service.

The Bottom Line

The Hilti Nuron cordless cut-out tool benefits from impressive weight loss without sacrificing performance to get it. The SCO 6-22’s performance combined with thoughtful design elements and an optional vac adapter make it one of the best options for professionals who need a workhorse cut-out tool.
