Studson Achieves Dual Certification for SHK-1 Safety Helmet

Dual-Certification Helmets Enable Compliance for Cross-Border Workers in the US and Canada

Safety helmets or hard hats are a necessity on pretty much any commercial jobsite, but the requirements vary depending on location, job, and employer. A prime example is Pros who work both sides of the US/Canada border. They need different Type II safety helmets to cover compliance for the two countries… until now. This month, Studson announced that its SHK-1 Full Brim safety helmet has achieved dual certification for both Canadian and American safety standards.

What are the implications of this compliance shift, and how does it affect future on-the-border applications?

Studson Safety Helmet Dual Certification: Overview

  • Type II safety helmet
  • Meets Canadian CSA Standard Z94.1-15 (R2024) and American ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 (R2019)
  • Rear-dial fit system
  • Four-point chin strap system
  • Fidlock magnetic buckle
  • Enhanced ventilation (Class C)
  • Compatible with all Studson helmet accessories

Safety compliance issues have plagued cross-border industrial operations on the US/Canada border for several years. In response to this, Studson has announced the first Type II safety helmet to provide seamless compliance for both countries.

The solution is the SHK-1 helmet. It meets both the Canadian CSA Standard Z94.1-15 (R2024) and the American ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 (R2019) safety standards, which is a big benefit for workers in both countries. Pros can now use the same Studson SHK-1 helmet on the job, no matter which side of the border they’re on.

Studson worked closely with Koroyd, which provides the Advanced Impact Technology within the new SHK-1 helmet. The Koroyd material crumples on impact to absorb maximum force, reducing the risk of life-altering head injuries. As a Type II helmet, that technology protects from both direct and angled impacts.

The new dual-compliant helmets include the same features found in existing SHK-1 helmets, like a rear dial-fit system for easy adjustment and a four-point chin strap system with a Fidlock magnetic buckle for one-handed, gloved operation. Finally, Studson also says they’re compatible with all of their existing safety helmet accessories for a customizable experience.

Final Thoughts

While this dual certification benefits a specific share of tradesmen, it now sets a precedent for other cross-border safety compliance. Canada and the U.S.A. share a very large border, which requires regular maintenance in some areas. For Canadian workers who work on that line, especially in the construction, oil and gas, forestry, and mining industries, Studson’s new helmet advancements represent a new safety milestone for workers on either side.
