Greenworks 24V Pro Impact Wrench IW5550

A few years back, Greenworks launched a new line of brushless 24V power tools that were aimed squarely at homeowners and the DIY crowd. Now, they’ve upped the ante with the brand new Greenworks 24V Pro lineup…and this time, they’re going after the Pros. Today, I’m taking a closer look at the Greenworks 24V Pro 1/2-inch Impact Wrench to see what sets it apart from the crowd and to determine whether it really has what it takes to compete with the best.

Greenworks 24V Pro Impact Wrench Performance

Speed and Power

At the heart of the Greenworks 24V Pro impact wrench is a brushless motor that delivers a top speed of 2,400 RPM, an impact rate of 3,400 IPM, and up to 560 ft-lbs of torque. This is more than enough power for most folks, and when you consider the overall value here, it’s very compelling.

The IW5550 features three main speed modes, as well as an Auto Mode for added convenience. The control panel is located on the foot for easy access, and it sports a simple button to toggle through the modes. Unfortunately, Greenworks doesn’t specify the RPM’s in each mode, but they do list the torque specs for each mode.

ModeTorque

2300 ft-lbs
3400 ft-lbs
Auto Mode560 ft-lbs

Auto Mode

Like many impact tools, the IW5550 features an Auto Mode that automatically halts rotation once your fastener breaks free. This helps prevent dropping a nut or bolt, or worse, sending it flying in some unknown direction. This mode is only accessible when in reverse, but it really comes in handy when you need it.

Model Comparison

So, how does the IW5550 compare to other models from top brands? Let’s take a look:

After looking at these factors, it’s clear that Greenworks has a very attractive value proposition. Performance-wise, this is a perfectly capable impact wrench. Everything from lugnuts, mid-size lag bolts, and seized nuts and bolts is well within reach.

Of course, all compact impact wrenches reach their limit at some point. To tackle those heavier jobs, Greenworks also has Pro 24V mid-torque and high-torque models, giving you legitimate options at all three core performance levels.

Size and Weight

The Greenworks IW5550 weighs 2.9 pounds as a bare tool, 3.9 pounds with a 2.0Ah battery, and 4.56 pounds with a 4.0Ah battery. The head measures 5.75 inches from end to end, allowing you to work in tight spaces with ease. Compared to what we’re used to on the Pro side of things, it’s noticeably lighter and roughly mid-range in terms of accessing tight spaces.

That said, if you need to go even more compact, Greenworks has another option for you. Their 24V Pro 3/8-inch impact wrench is even lighter and smaller, yet still has 400 ft-lbs of breakaway torque.

In hand, the tool feels very well-balanced, even with the larger 4.0Ah battery. This is a big deal, especially on those longer days, and ultimately leads to less wrist fatigue, more control, and better maneuverability.

Greenworks was very generous with the overmolding. At the top, you’ll find rubber bumpers on the motor housing, while the grip area features some light texturing and grooves to help channel away sweat and debris.

Additional Features

  • LED Worklight: Iluminate dark work spaces
  • 2-positon Belt Hook: Customize the tool to fit your preferences and work flow
  • Tether Ready: Quickly attach the tool to your belt or harness when working at height

Greenworks 24V Pro Impact Wrench Price

As I mentioned earlier, Greenworks is really targeting price and value with this new line of 24V tools. The Greenworks Pro IW5550 retails for $99 as a bare tool and comes with a 5-year warranty.

The best part? You can find these on the shelves of your local Walmart, and they’re also eligible for delivery through Walmart. This means the work doesn’t have to stop, and you can keep up production!

Should You Buy It?

The Greenworks Pro IW5550 makes a strong case for itself by focusing on the areas that matter most to value-minded Pros. With plenty of power and speed under the hood, it has the ability to handle most automotive and mechanical tasks you’ll encounter around the garage or shop.

What really sets this impact wrench apart from the competition is its value. Greenworks gives you a capable brushless impact wrench that’s both rugged and powerful, and costs significantly less. Not to mention, they’re just down the road at your local Walmart… it doesn’t get much more convenient than that!

If you’re a Pro who regularly deals with large nuts and bolts, heavily seized fasteners, or extreme torque requirements, I’d recommend stepping up to a more powerful high-torque model. However, for DIYers, homeowners, and Pros who need a dependable impact wrench that won’t break the bank, the IW5550 is an easy recommendation. It may not be the strongest impact wrench in its class, but at this price, it’s hard to argue with this combination of performance and value.
