After getting some steps in these boots, I have to tip my cap to CAT. Their innovative Power Spring design delivered exactly what it promised—a cushioned stride with plenty of rebound. The overall design is well built and it's clear that the Excavators are jobsite ready right out of the box.

Overall Score 9.6 (out of 10)

Caterpillar has long built its work boot lineup around the same reputation as its heavy equipment—tough, dependable, and built to take abuse. The CAT Excavator series sits near the top of the brand’s work boot range, focusing on durability while trying to add modern comfort technology.

I’ve been wearing the Excavator Power Spring 6-inch Waterproof Work Boot, which leans heavily into the comfort angle by introducing a new technology. But how do these boots perform when the rubber meets the road? Let’s find out!

Pros

  • Highly cushioned footbed
  • Multiple styles and heights
  • Protective toe cap and heel guard
  • All metal hardware
  • Extra padding around the heel

Cons

  • Needs a little more break-in time than most cement construction boots
  • My toes felt a little cramped

CAT Excavator Power Spring Work Boot: What They Say

CAT Excavator Power Spring Work Boot

According to CAT, the Excavator Power Spring is engineered to combine industrial durability with energy-return comfort. What this means for you is that each step is greeted with a generous amount of padding, even on hard surfaces.

CAT specifically built these boots with the trades in mind. After conducting numerous surveys and extensive research with folks in the field, here’s what Mike Maloney, CAT’s Chief Product Officer had to say:

“Trade workers shape our world with grit and pride, but the toll this work can take often goes unseen. We built Power Spring Technology to keep people moving with purpose because we know the work they do is demanding, but life outside of work matters just as much; it absorbs impact and keeps them moving both on and off the clock.”

– Mike Maloney, CAT CPO

Here are some of the key highlights behind CAT’s design:

  • Composite safety toe: rated to ASTM F2412-24 standards
  • Power Spring dual-density midsole: Multi-layer design to absorbs impact and return energy
  • Waterproof leather upper with seam-sealed liner: Built to withstand all weather conditions
  • Slip-resistant rubber outsole: Reduce the risk of falls on low-traction surfaces
  • Electrical hazard protection: Rated up to 14,000 volts in dry conditions
  • Cement construction: Makes for a lighter and more flexible build
  • Molded PU foam footbed: Improved padding underfoot give relief during long days work days
  • Support band: An active strap adds support around your ankle delivering a secure, locked‑in fit

The boot also features 100% post-industrial recycled sock lining materials and odor-control treatment, adding a sustainability angle to the design.

CAT Excavator Power Spring Work Boot: What We Say

Power Spring Technology

CAT Excavator Power Spring Work Boot

The most standout feature on these boots is the Power Spring Technology. This system centers around a dual-density midsole comprised of two distinct foams: a firm outer structure that provides stability, and a softer inner core that absorbs impact as you walk. These two layers, combined with CAT’s flexible twin-track outsole help to keep you steady on questionable terrain.

Power Spring

In theory, this approach mirrors what we see in athletic footwear: soft cushioning where you land and firmer support where you push off. Combined with the molded PU footbed, the result should feel noticeably more cushioned than traditional heavy-duty work boots.

From the moment I put on these boots, the benefits of this technology were evident. I could feel cushioning from heel to toe, but it wasn’t so squishy that it was unpleasant. Walking around the concrete floor of our shop for the first time, I felt almost no discomfort (other than wearing brand new boots), and over the course of a few days, they only became more comfortable as the materials loosened up.

The multi-layer design reminded me a lot of the Wolverine Infinity System Work Boots, but I have to admit that I think CAT has the upper hand on comfort in this case.

Construction

Outsole

As far as work boots go, CAT didn’t stray too far from the norm in terms of styling. The rubber outsole is attached using cement construction and sports a hiker-esque lug pattern. The lugs are spaced well to allow dirt, mud, and other debris to fall away easily, but they’re also not so aggressive that they’re uncomfortable on hard, flat surfaces.

Another feature I enjoy is the protective toe and heel caps. The rubber toe cap helps protect the leather from scuffs and wear when kneeling down. As silly as this might sound, the heel cap protrudes slightly, and I found them easier to kick off at the end of the day.

Metal Hardware

Looking towards the top, you have all-metal hardware and reinforced stitching at key wear points. The waterproof leather upper is soft and flexible and features a support band around the top. I was a bit skeptical about that particular design element until they were actually on my feet… and boy was I wrong.

The extra band loops around the back of the boot and feels a bit like when you wrap long laces around the top of your boot. It added a comforting level of support that I didn’t know I was missing, and combined with extra heel padding, my foot felt truly engaged with the boot.

Fit and Comfort

CAT Excavator Power Spring Work Boot

I typically wear a size 11 regular when it comes to work boots. In terms of sizing, CAT is right on the money. However, my one minor complaint is that my toes felt a little cramped due the shape of the toe box. I think in this case, ordering a half-size up would be the right move and (literally) give my feet a little more wiggle room.

Right out of the box, these boots were fairly comfortable and had a decent amount of flexibility when walking and kneeling. There will obviously be some break-in time, but you should be good to go for a full day from the moment you open the box.

All of these benefits stem from the cement construction. While direct-attach and Goodyear welted methods create stronger bonds between the upper and outsole, few designs match the immediate, out-of-the-box comfort that cement-constructed work boots provide.

Another benefit of this construction style is that they’re typically a little lighter than welted boots. These boots weigh in around 2 pounds each (size 11), which is nearly identical to the CAT Threshold Work Boots that I reviewed back in 2024. Granted, they’re not as light as a typical running shoe, but 2 pounds isn’t bad for a comp toe work boot!

CAT Excavator Power Spring Work Boot Price

These boots featured in this review retail for $179.95 and are backed by CAT’s 30-day Footwear Comfort Guarantee. Try them out for 30 days, and if you don’t love ’em, send ’em back.

If these aren’t your style, CAT has you covered.

  • 6-Inch Soft Toe: $174.95
  • 8-Inch Comp Toe: $189.95
  • Chelsea Comp Toe: $179.95
  • Wellington Comp Toe: $204.95

The Bottom Line

After getting some steps in these boots, I have to tip my cap to CAT. Their innovative Power Spring design delivered exactly what it promised—a cushioned stride with plenty of rebound. The overall design is well built, and it’s clear that the Excavators are jobsite-ready right out of the box.

For me, I appreciate the small details such as the metal hardware, versatile lug pattern, and the extra padding at the heel. These are the refined elements that prove to me that CAT didn’t simply phone this in and really took the time to understand what buyers want. On top of that, coming in under the $200 mark is huge, especially considering the level of comfort outpaces many premium competitors.

There are still some questions as to the boot’s lifespan between the cement construction and how well the new midsole foam holds up over time. However, they make for an affordable, comfortable work boot that can bring relief to your aching feet.
