DeWalt 20V Max Cordless 2 1/4 HP Plunge Router Flaunts a Unique Design
Cordless power tools have come a long way, and the latest routers are proving that you no longer need a cord to get serious performance. Among the newest contenders is the DeWalt 20V Max Cordless 2 1/4 HP Plunge Router (DCW620), designed for professionals and demanding hobbyists alike. But with so many cordless routers on the market, how does this one stack up in terms of power, precision, and usability? We’ll put the DCW620 through its paces, compare it to some of its leading competitors, and see whether it truly deserves a spot in your tool arsenal.
Pros
- Excellent ergonomics
- Anti-Rotation System
- Unique dust collection
- Soft start improves handling
- Variable speed motor

Speed and Power
In addition to the router’s 2 1/4 peak horsepower, you have an adjustable-speed brushless motor that ranges from 11,000 – 23,000 RPM to work with. Backing up that speed, the DCW620 has the torque to handle bits up to 2 1/2 inches in diameter. DeWalt also includes a 1/2-inch and a 1/4-inch collet so you can use a wide range of bits.
Speed Setting | Approx. RPMs |
---|---|
1 | 11,000 RPM |
2 | 13,000 RPM |
3 | 15,000 RPM |
4 | 17,000 RPM |
5 | 19,000 RPM |
6 | 21,000 RPM |
7 | 23,000 RPM |
DeWalt tells us that you can get up to 256 linear feet of 5/8-inch roundover in pine using a 5.0Ah PowerStack battery. However, if you use an 8.0Ah PowerPack battery like we did, you should expect significantly longer runtime in the 400-foot range.
The peak horsepower matches models from Makita and Milwaukee, while Metabo HPT is a little lower in power. Notably, Metabo HPT (36V) and Makita (40V max) are running 36V systems while Milwaukee uses M18 batteries. Since 20V Max and 18V are the same voltage, this puts DeWalt and Milwaukee in the same voltage category. Of course, advancements in battery technology are evening the playing field, and voltage alone is no longer an indicator of a cordless tool’s power.
Here’s a quick look at the top four cordless plunge routers on the market today:
Max HP | Speed Range | Plunge Capacity | |
---|---|---|---|
DeWalt 20V Max DCW620 | 2 1/4 HP | 11,000 – 23,000 RPM | 2 1/2 in. |
Makita 40V max XGT GPR01 | 2 1/4 HP | 8,000 – 25,000 RPM | 2 3/8 in |
Metabo HPT 36V M3612DA | 2 HP | 11,000 – 25,000 RPM | 1 31/32 in |
Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2838 | 2 1/4 HP | 12,000 – 25,000 RPM | 2 1/2 in |
This router features a built-in soft start that helps minimize the motor’s start-up torque, ultimately giving you more control over the tool.
Visibility
One area we feel could use some improvement is visibility. If you’re edge routing or using a pattern, it’s not really an issue, but if you’re free-handing the cuts, the sightline to the bit is obstructed by the spindle lock button and the smoked plastic chip guards. In this case, we wish DeWalt had used clear plastic so you could see the bit a little easier.
It’s not a deal breaker, but it’s something to know before buying. Of course, you could always omit the chip guard altogether, but you’ll see a noticeable drop in chip collection efficiency.
Anti-Rotation System
DeWalt added something its competitors haven’t, though. With its Anti-Rotation System, the tool can sense excessive rotation and shut the motor down. This is very similar to the kickback control that we witnessed on the DeWalt 20V DCD1007 Hammer Drill. The system is very sensitive and rapidly stops the bit’s rotation if the tool jerks left or right.
I was genuinely impressed by the shutdown speed, and as someone who has experienced a near-miss while working on a project, I appreciate this safety feature even more.
DeWalt 20V Max Cordless 2 1/4 HP Plunge Router Design Notes
- Model: DeWalt DCW620
- Power Source: DeWalt 20V battery
- Weight: 8.5 lbs (bare tool), 10.6 lbs (with kitted 8.0Ah PowerPack battery)
- Tool Height: 11 in.
Size and Weight
The DeWalt DCW620 weighs 8.5 pounds as a bare tool, 10.6 pounds with the kitted 8.0Ah PowerPack battery, and the tool body stands 11 inches tall. The DCW620 also measures about 11 3/4 inches wide, which is a bit wider than most compared to some of the other routers we’ve tested. With that said, I like the wide-set handles because it feels easier to control the router, and it puts a little extra space between your hands and the motor housing.
Ergonomics
Unlike the DeWalt 20V Max trim router, which has a similar design to its popular corded counterpart, the 2 1/4 HP plunge router has a fresh foundation. There are several things that stand out. First, the profile is quite different from what Milwaukee and Metabo HPT offer. The top appears to be a bit shorter, giving it more of a squatted look.
Part of that is because the controls are on the right handle rather than the center housing like other models. With that configuration, you can get set up with both hands on the handles and activate the router using the trigger instead of flipping a rocker switch with one hand and holding on with the other.
The left handle has the plunge lock lever within easy reach of your forefinger, and the speed dial is within reach of your thumb. Between the left and right sides, you can fully operate the router without having to remove either hand.
Plunge Depth Adjustment
DeWalt equipped this plunge router with a very straightforward plunge depth adjustment system. It features a simple locking lever that allows you to adjust the plunger depth and a depth rod with a threaded foot for micro adjustments. It also sports an adjustable 3-stage plunge depth turret that aids in making progressive plunge cuts.
Air Lock Vacuum Port
One of the more unique features on the DeWalt DCW620 is the Air Lock vacuum port on top of the tool that takes the place of a more traditional side attachment. This does two things: 1, it clears your sightline while you’re working, and 2, it keeps the hose up and out of the way while you’re working. DeWalt’s design will really come in handy if you’re working in a shop with an overhead dust collection system.
DeWalt designed this system to be compatible with their Air Lock vacuum system, specifically the DWV015 dust extractor. If you want to use any other style, you’ll need to pick up a DWC9036 Air Lock adapter or even devise a DIY solution.
Additional Highlights
- Two LEDs lighting up the bit and work area
- Tool-Connect ready (chip sold separately)
- Compatible with all DeWalt 20V batteries
- Base is compatible with side fence (not included)
- Comes with guide bushing and centering cone
DeWalt 20V Max Cordless 2 1/4 HP Plunge Router Price
The DCW620 retails for $369 as a bare tool, which is how it’s primarily packaged. However, there are several bundle deals that vary by retailer. The bundle we tested was $568 and included an 8.0Ah PowerPack battery, but not a charger. DeWalt backs this router with a 3-year limited warranty, 1-year of free service, and a 90-day money-back guarantee.
The Bottom Line
The DeWalt DCW620 delivers an impressive blend of power, precision, and Pro-focused features that make it a standout choice for serious woodworkers and contractors. With thoughtful safety additions like the Anti-Rotation System, excellent ergonomics, and a unique dust collection setup, it’s clear DeWalt has designed this router with Pros in mind. Whether you’re upgrading from a corded model or looking to expand your cordless tool lineup, the DCW620 is a reliable, well-rounded option that competes strongly in its class.
