EGO Select Cut XP Speed IQ Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Drive System

EGO Select Cut XP Speed IQ Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Review

This self-propelled mower (LM2167SP) takes the foundation of the EGO Select Cut XP and adds Speed IQ technology, which digitally senses and adapts the mower’s speed to your stride. You don’t need to adjust levers or dials like with previous models; all the work is done by the mower itself.

Earlier self-adjusting speed controls include Toro’s Personal Pace and Ryobi’s Smart Trek systems. Both designs use a spring-loaded handle that adjusts the speed as you put more pressure into it. They work but can be a bit jumpy on uneven ground.

EGO’s system is much different. The handle doesn’t move, instead relying on sensors built into the drive system. The real-world difference is night and day. Speed IQ rolls over the same bumps and grade changes that caused a jumpy experience with the other systems with a much smoother adjustment.

It takes some getting used to, though. We naturally push a little harder or lighter as the ground changes when we use traditional self-propelled mowers. With Speed IQ, it’s about maintaining a steady pressure on the handle and trusting the mower to adjust accordingly. It only took a few minutes of mowing to find the right balance, though.

Controls

Control Screen

As if we needed another reason to be stoked about this model, it also features the industry’s first handlebar-integrated digital display. In the center, there’s a battery level indicator with 5% readings. It’s super-handy to have, especially if you’re cutting on the edge of your battery’s runtime.

There are several controls built in. You can turn the Speed IQ drive on or off. The mower rolls easily with it off, with a rolling resistance similar to a good push mower.

There are also three speed modes to choose from. As we’re writing, we’re in the dry part of our year, and ECO mode is all we need for the most part. As we get more consistent rain, Normal mode becomes the go-to. If we go too long between cuts, there’s a Turbo mode to cut at the highest speeds. Of course, the higher the blade speed, the lower your overall runtime.

Finally, there’s a button to turn the LED headlights on or off.

Power and Cut Quality

Slect Cut blades

Like previous Select Cut models, the LM2167SP mower is a stacked-blade system that includes three interchangeable blades. All three come in the box, so you can select the one that best fits your mowing needs and install it. The upper blade is the same no matter which of the other three blades you choose. EGO also includes everything you need for mulching, bagging, or side discharge.

EGO’s brushless motor carries 8.3 ft-lbs of torque, which is one of the strongest available among battery-powered lawn mowers. It easily outperforms our 160cc gas mowers and is much closer to what we see from the 200cc class.

With the 7.5Ah battery that comes in the kit, you can expect to mow for up to an hour in normal cutting conditions, depending on which blade you use.

EGO Select Cut XP Speed IQ Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Review

As we’ve come to expect from EGO, the cut quality is excellent. Considering the foundation of this model is the same as the precious Select Cut XP, there are no surprises. There are differences based on the blade you install (bagging efficiency, clipping size, etc.). However, the cut evenness is excellent as usual.

Additional Features

  • Single-point height adjustment
  • Three handle operating heights
  • Handle pivots forward for vertical storage
  • Compatible with all EGO 56V ARC Lithium batteries

EEGO Select Cut XP Speed IQ Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Price

Most retailers have the mower with a 12.0Ah battery and Turbo Charger for $999.00 (EGO LM2167SP). The mower on its own is $599.00 (EGO LM2160SP). EGO backs the mower for 5 years, so be sure to register it after you buy.
