Igniting a Revolution: True Plasma Lighter XRL Review

True Plasma Lighter XRL

It’s summertime, and while we’re still reviewing the latest and greatest power tools, my mind is drifting into the backcountry where fireside meals after a day of hiking and fly fishing are calling. But just how does that fire get started (the one you can cook on, not the burning desire in my heart)? Normally, I’d pack a fueled lighter with some waterproof matches as a backup plan, but True’s Plasma Lighter XRL offers a different way.

Is it a better way? That’s what I’m exploring in this review (unfortunately, from Central Florida instead of the Rocky Mountains).

True Plasma Lighter XRL Basics

4-Post Plasma Lighter

If you’re new to plasma lighters, they’re a game-changing concept. Instead of using matches or fuel, they rely solely on electricity to create a plasma arc for igniting things. Better still, they’re waterproof and windproof, operating in conditions other lighters can only spark in. They can even operate upside down.

True’s design is different in a couple of key ways. First, it uses a dual arc design, so you’ll notice four posts instead of the two that basic models have. Each pair creates its own arc that crosses the other in the middle. It makes for more reliable ignitions and can handle winds up to 80 MPH.

The “XR” in the name is for extended reach. You can pull the head up to extend it a couple of inches and even bend it to help you get things going.

Beyond an ignition source, there’s also a built-in LED light, adding the “L” to the XRL designation. It has three modes: high, low, and strobe. Simply press the button on the side to activate the light and cycle through the modes.

LED Flashlight

The light isn’t going to signal the International Space Station like some flashlights, but it’s an effective personal light. On high, it produces 55 lumens and can run for about an hour. Low nets you 35 lumens with two hours of runtime.

This model is powered by a lithium polymer battery and can ignite more than 100 times on a single charge. It recharges in about an hour via a USB-C port.

Using the True Plasma Lighter XRL

Because it’s so much easier to light than matches or traditional lighters, the True Plasma Lighter XRL features a three-stage ignition system. First, there’s a flip lock to prevent the top from opening. Then, there’s a button that release the lid to spring open when you press it. These two safety measures also double to ensure the posts and charging port are protected from water with an IPX6 rating.

Finally, there’s a button right where you’d expect to find the flint sparker that brings the lighter to life.

The overall size is about the width and thickness of a Zippo and stands about a half-inch taller. It’s plenty small and light enough to easily carry in your pocket and won’t take up much room in your backpack.

If you prefer to keep it closer, it comes with a lanyard strap to carry around your neck or loop onto the exterior of your pack. It clips onto the end, so you don’t have to worry about removing the entire lanyard to use the lighter.

When it comes to what you can ignite, your options are almost as wide as matches or a standard lighter. There are two caveats, though.

One is that you can only keep the lighter going for about six seconds at a time. Consumable butane lighters can hold their flame for as long as you can press the button, and Zippo-style lighters can go until they run out of fuel.

The other caveat is that this does not produce a soft flame. Those of you who enjoy pipes or cigars shouldn’t count on plasma to properly light them.

True Plasma Lighter XRL Price

So how much should you expect to pay for this modern lighting solution? Less than you might think.

The XRL model I’ve been using is $29.99, and if you don’t want the LED light, the XR version is $24.99. Either way, you’re backed with a 1-year warranty. So, even if you’re not 100% sure plasma is for you, there’s not much of a risk in trying it.

Should You Buy It?

If you light candles inside, your grill or firepit in the backyard, or campfires on your outdoor adventures, the True Plasma Lighter XRL is for you. You don’t have to worry about water damaging your matches, carrying extra fuel for your lighter, or the trash that builds up from using them. Just keep it charged up and it’s ready for almost anything.

For the price, it also makes a great gift for the outdoor lovers on your list (Luke and Ed, try to act surprised when you open your Christmas gifts from me).

In addition to the pipe and cigar smokers I already mentioned, there are other scenarios where this isn’t a good fit. Anytime you need a soft or extended flame, you’ll need to go a different route. For example, it won’t help you with things like shrink-wrap electrical connections. But for your most common ignition needs, it’s a highly convenient solution.
