Brushless Update Gives Ryobi’s 18V Pruning Shears A Greater Cutting Capacity

Getting your yard whipped back into shape can be a daunting task for the best of us. This goes tenfold when your pruning tasks have to be done using a hand tool. Enter the Ryobi 18V brushless pruning shears. These shears improve the brand’s existing cordless pruner with a brushless update. We’ll go over this tool’s features to see how they compare to others on the market to see if they’ll make to our list of best pruning shears.

Ryobi 18V Brushless Pruning Shears: The Big Deal

Ryobi 18V Brushless Pruning Shears

The Ryobi 18V brushless pruner replaces a manual tool, so your hands will thank you at the end of the day. Its 2-inch cutting blades feature a bypass design—just like manual shears—giving you clean and complete cuts.

These shears have a cut capacity of up to 1 inch. For reference, the brushed Ryobi P2540VNM pruning shears had a cut capacity of 3/4-inch. This extra capacity comes in handy when you have branches and limbs a bit on the thicker side.

To activate the blade, these shears feature a safety “lock-out trigger” that you engage before squeezing the switch trigger. To open the blade (if it’s closed), you simply squeeze the switch trigger. Once the blade is opened (its normal resting position), place a branch you want to trim within the open shears and squeeze the trigger until the blade closes completely. The blades will remain closed until you release the trigger.

Tool-free Removable Blade

For super-easy sharpening, Ryobi included a tool-free blade removal system. For a homeowner, this is a really nice feature. Both the Milwaukee M12 brushless pruning shears and the DeWalt 20V cordless pruner require a tool to remove and/or change the blade.

Simply flip up the tab on the blade-change knob and unscrew it to release the blade. Now, you can sharpen or replace the blade as needed. When you replace the blade, simply reverse the process and flatten the tab. Locking pins built into the tab keep it from accidentally moving or loosening during use.

Additional Features

  • Included plastic sheath protects blades from coming in contact with any materials while in storage
  • Soft-grip handle design for extra comfort
  • LED work light located underneath the blades helps you see in low-light conditions
