I was thrilled to receive the Ryobi 18V Cordless Narrow Crown Stapler (P360) to review after having the chance to use its cousin, the 18 Gauge Cordless Brad Nailer, a few months back. Together, they have become my go-to tools for trim fastening. Having a wainscoting job to do gave me the perfect opportunity to put this member of the Airstrike family to the test.
Ryobi P360 Airstrike Features
One of the first things that I noticed about this tool was the weight. Coming in at 6.8 pounds with the battery installed, it was a little awkward at first. I quickly got past that though considering that there was no heavy, noisy air compressor to drag around or air hose to tangled up in. These cordless nailers and staplers make getting wood on the wall a true pleasure.
The Ryobi P360 Airstrike uses 18 gauge 1/4″ narrow crown staples ranging in length from 3/8″ to 1-1/2″. It can operate in two modes: contact actuation for working quickly or single sequential for precision applications. A simple switch is on the tool to choose between the two modes. The stapler includes Grip Light technology that engages the LED light by gripping the tool’s handle.
The tool-free depth of drive adjustment and adjustable air pressure helps to maintain proper depth. It also protects the surface of your materials from overdriving. One of the more useful features is the low staple indicator light. Sure, you can turn the tool and look in the magazine, but when you’re working quickly in contact actuation mode, it sure makes it easier to know when to reload. The magazine has a capacity of 105 staples. Ryobi claims you can drive up to 1000 staples on one battery.
Ryobi P360 Stapler with Wainscoting
On a recent job, I had the chance to install wainscoting in the foyer and stairwell with ace carpenter, Tom Gaige. This stapler was far superior to the pneumatic units I’ve used in the past. The job site was occupied. This gave us the additional challenge of minimizing noise and avoiding tripping hazards that would normally accompany a compressor and hose setup. The Ryobi P360 Airstrike Crown Stapler let me cover a gamut of applications with its range of 3/8″ to 1-1/2″ staples.
I found it especially useful in installing the 1/4″ birch plywood that we used as a base for the wainscot. The Airstrike gave the surface tension necessary for installing it correctly. The Ryobi P360 Airstrike is also excellent for trim molding. It really works well with anything that can benefit from greater holding power with minimal surface marring.
