Sharper, Tougher, Better: Gerber Assert MagnaCut Folding Knife

Gerber Assert MagnaCut

Gerber Levels Up with MagnaCut Steel in the New Assert Folding Knife

Gerber continues to refine its everyday carry lineup with the Assert MagnaCut Folding Knife, a USA-made model that blends lightweight construction with premium steel performance. Building on the success of the original Assert, this updated version strikes the perfect balance between functionality and refinement for everyday use. I’m going to highlight the key features and design notes that set this knife apart from the pack so you can decide if it’s fit to be your new EDC knife.

Gerber Assert MagnaCut Folding Knife Design Notes

Gerber Assert MagnaCut

The Gerber Assert USA Model folding pocket knife mirrors the design of its predecessor, but employs a MagnaCut steel plain edge blade rather than S30V steel. For the grip, Gerber opted for durable glass-filled nylon, which is molded with a geometric honeycomb inner structure for added strength and rigidity. On the outside, you have some deep texturing to help maintain a secure hold on the knife as you work. This design is lightweight at just 1.8 ounces, and fits nicely in my medium-sized hands.

MagnaCut Steel Blade

So what is MagnaCut steel? If you’re not familiar with MagnaCut steel, it’s one of Crucible’s newest super steels for knife blades. It’s a much tougher blend than most premium steels, such as S45VN and 154CM, displaying high corrosion resistance, which drives it to become an incredibly popular option for high-end knife manufacturers.

Gerber Assert MagnaCut Blade

While its edge retention is slightly lower than M390 steel, MagnaCut blades are much easier to sharpen and far more durable. This makes them an excellent option for your everyday carry. Of course, as a premium blade material, the trade-off with MagnaCut is that it usually comes with a higher pricetag.

Folding Action

Just like the previous model, the blade deploys using an ambidextrous thumb stud. What’s unique about this design is that you can actually adjust the position of the stud using a T8 Torx bit. This allows you to customize the knife to fit what’s most comfortable for your hand.

You can also remove the stud altogether if you prefer a more streamlined blade design.

The folding mechanism is nearly identical to what we saw on the Benchmade Mini Bugout pocket knife. This pivot lock design is accessible from either side, helping to keep your fingers out of harm’s way, and it’s easy to close one-handed.

Pocket Clip

Gerber equipped this knife with a reversible deep carry pocket clip that sits in the tip-up orientation, and a lanyard hole for easy tethering.

Gerber Assert MagnaCut Folding Knife Price

The Gerber Assert MagnaCut USA model retails for $209.99 and is backed by the Gerber Guarantee, a limited lifetime warranty.

Should You Buy It?

Overall, the Gerber Assert MagnaCut Folding Knife delivers an impressive mix of premium materials, smart engineering, and everyday practicality. The MagnaCut steel offers excellent durability and edge stability, while the adjustable thumb stud and ambidextrous pivot lock add a level of customization. Lightweight, reliable, and built in the USA, the Assert MagnaCut proves that Gerber’s attention to detail continues to evolve with each new release — making it a solid choice for anyone looking to upgrade their EDC knife.

The only hang-up for some folks is going to be the price tag. As a premium knife made with high-quality materials, the Gerber Assert carries with it a higher price. In this case, I consider this a “buy once, cry once” purchase.

Gerber built this knife to last, and it stands to reason that the Assert will outlast the more cheaply made knives you’ll find on the shelf at your local outdoor store. The Gerber Assert MagnaCut folding knife is a great companion for outdoor adventure, simple everyday carry, and is sure to please the knife aficionado in your life.
