Stanley I-Beam Level 42-480 Professional

Stanley I-Beam Level
PTR Review
  • Pro Review 8.2

It's not the sexiest level on the market, but at less than $16, this I-beam level can probably tackle just about everything you need it to at about 1/3 of the price of other pro-quality levels.

Overall Score 8.2 (out of 10)

When we think of professional-grade tools for demanding applications, it’s easy for our thought processes to sort of begin and end with some of the sleeker, sexier name brands. Your Milwaukee’s and Makita’s and DeWalt’s make some impressive tools that generally perform well and look good doing it. But, their prices can run a bit high. Sure, sometimes paying top dollar for quality tools is necessary, but sometimes you can get the job done just as well with something less extravagant and way less expensive. It’s with that thought in mind that we look at the Stanley I-beam level, model 42-480 Professional.

In recent years, Stanley might be best known for its budget-friendly, DIY/Prosumer status. They make tools that are easy on the wallet, but perhaps aren’t the slickest models available, save for the Stanley FatMax tape measure that Pros love. The Stanley I-beam level operates in this area of the market as well. For less than $15, it gets the job done inexpensively, but not necessarily with the same aesthetic flourish. Will that matter to you? Let’s take a look.

Stanley I-Beam Level Pro Highlights

Accuracy

Stanley advertises this budget-friendly level as their professional model. Constructed from heavy-duty aluminum, the Stanley I-beam is rigid and has an of accuracy 0.0015″. This is just a touch lower than we’re used to seeing in the professional market; 0.0005″/1″ is the baseline we use. The difference here is marginal for many tasks but still worth considering.

Visibility

The Stanley I-Beam Level has 3 vials: two plumb vials on either side of the level and one horizontal bubble. Stanley has mounted the vials directly into the aluminum, and they’ve encased them in a protective plastic housing. The top of the level has a cutout for easier viewing of the middle vial as well.

The vials are a standard yellow that falls in line with our baseline expectations.

The handles and hang holes have been cut out of the aluminum, which leaves a bit of a sharp edge. Rubber grips might have been a nice inclusion, though undoubtedly, this feature would drive the price up. Even with this cut, the I-beam construction keeps the weight down below most other levels, so it’s not as rough on your hands as it could be.

The bottom edge includes a groove for fitting the level to pipe. There aren’t any magnets or other bells and whistles to speak of. Just keep in mind the target of this design is to keep the price down.

Durability

While I-beam construction is weaker than a box level, it uses less material so it’s both lighter and less expensive. Stanley does us a favor and uses aluminum for the construction material – a big step up from an ABS or other plastic design. It’s possible to go up in durability by increasing the thickness of the aluminum, again, at the cost of raising the price.

Speaking of price, the Stanley I-Beam Level Pro retails for $13.59. It also comes with Stanley’s Limited Lifetime Warranty. Between the price and the warranty, this level costs considerably less than many other options you’ll find out there.

Final Thoughts

The Stanley I-beam level exists as an entry-level professional grade option. It’s a little lower in the accuracy department than we like and they didn’t really go over the top with the feature set here either. It does have a 3-vial setup, removable rubber endcaps, and protective housing around the vials. The pipe groove and top view cutout are helpful additions but don’t look to this level to blow you away with many bells and whistles.

Where this level shines is in the value category. You really can’t beat this level at its price point. A sub-$16 aluminum level that works for most commercial applications? Yes, please. Sure, it would be nice if Stanley had included _______ (fill in the blank for yourself). At such a low price, I don’t really care about any of the extras. I can buy a stack of these for my crew and not be nearly as upset if they damage one. At the end of the day, having nice things is great, but having inexpensive things that get the job done just as well can be even better.
