DeWalt DWFP12658 15-Degree Coil Roofing Nailer Preview

The DeWalt DWFP12658 15-Degree Coil Roofing Nailer weighs just under 5 lbs (4.85) and is designed to be a versatile high production roofing nailer for professional use. The aforementioned aluminum frame and cap are assisted by skid-resistant pads and wear guards for safety as well as tool protection. Anyone who has set down an older Senco only to watch it begin a slow but steady slide towards the edge of a roof knows the scenario (and subsequent sickening feeling) that DeWalt is attempting to avoid! The nailer comes with a tool-free selectable trigger for switching between the popular contact (bump) or sequential modes. While bump mode is the mode of choice for most roofers, siding applications will tend towards the sequential trigger setup—so this feature is becoming almost standard now for new tools. The tool uses 15 degree wire-weld coil nails in 120 nail magazines and supports sizes from 3/4 inch to 1-3/4 inch.

In terms of aesthetics, the new nailer is updated with a textured grip that extends down further over the base of the handle. The current DeWalt D51321 roofing nailer has a smooth grip and is a tad more fragile and doesn’t come across as being quite as grippy. The new over-molded grip design offers what looks to be better slip-resistance and has been expanded over the base of the handle for added comfort and support. One other thing we like—and which finally seems to be catching on—is that the DWFP12658 comes with a 1/4 inch NPT plug. This is the most common air hose adapter and it’s great to see more manufacturer stop making excuses for why they don’t include one. High praise for a small feature, but it’s important. We only wish other tools like the Bosch RN175 coil roofing nailer included one.

The DeWalt DWFP12658 15-degree coil roofing nailer is designed for a variety of applications including asphalt and fiberglass shingles, roofing felt and tar paper, siding and cement board, as well as insulation boards. One other feature it has is a tool-free, adjustable shingle guide to aid in placement, though we haven’t found too many guys using those in the field.

The new DeWalt DWFP12658 15-degree coil roofing nailer comes with a limited lifetime warranty and the DWFP12658 kit includes the basic tool, oil, wrenches, the 1/4 inch NPT plug, and an owner’s manual. The roofing nailer is expected to sell for around $199 through home improvement centers and dealers.
