Key Features

Rather than requiring 120 VAC, the Hart Rotary Tool draws power from a 20V battery. This opens you up for a whole lot of portability should you need to take the show on the road. We’ve put this to the test in the past, working on marine applications and other projects that had us toting a cordless rotary tool between the garage and the river.

However, the Hart Rotary Tool also works well as a permanent fixture in the workshop or garage. It features a motor that runs anywhere between 5,000 to 34,000 RPM. You can dial in your desired speed with the large blue variable speed dial located near the “top” of the tool (when wall-mounted).

Handheld Rotary Tool & Accessories

Further, rather than the chunky feel of most of the plug-in rotary tools you might be used to, the Hart Rotary Tool features a handheld pen-style shaft. It feels light, and it’s comfortable to grip. You can maneuver it easily when removing material or polishing. It also features a spindle lock that makes it easy to change out bits.

Speaking of bits, the Hart HPRL01 includes 33 accessories. The kit gives you a variety of bits for sanding, grinding, sharpening, buffing, and cutting. You can store your more commonly-used accessories in the storage space on the top (front) of the unit. Your other accessories can remain in the tray that tucks neatly underneath or behind the unit—depending on how you have it oriented.

Our Thoughts

Having used several rotary tools in my time, I love the idea of a kit that runs off a battery. These tools really work well as portable solutions for projects and punch lists. As much as I love sitting on a stool at my workbench, being able to take a rotary tool along with me to grind or detail sand a piece really helps. We’ve even used them to tweak and repair marine motor parts.

Of course, you also get a great tool for wood carving and engraving—and sometimes that can be nicer to do at a table outdoors. Not having to drag a cord makes for a tool that you can use and enjoy literally anywhere.

Pricing

You can pick up the Hart 20V Rotary Tool at Walmart for $69 as a bare tool. The rotary tool comes with a pen and flex shaft, wrench, storage case, and 33 sanding, buffing, and cutting accessories. It also features a 3-year warranty.

Looks nice, and remarkably similar to the Ryobi cordless rotary tool – which would be no surprise as Hart is another brand under the TTI umbrella, like Ryobi. I don’t know if they come out of the same factory, but there’s definitely a family relationship there. If you’re just getting the one tool, it makes sense to just evaluate the one tool. But for anyone already invested in cordless tools, it generally makes sense to stick within one tool family / brand if you can find the tools you need, as the batteries get pricey. If you can stick to… Read more »
