There are a few ways to control a rotary tool and HART uses the combination of an on/off slide switch and a separate variable speed slider. HART notes that it has 5 speeds, but there are actually steps in between each one giving you 18 different speeds by our count. Here are the speeds you can expect at each of the 5 main levels:

  • 5,000 RPM
  • 10,000 RPM
  • 15,000 RPM
  • 20,000 RPM
  • 25,000 RPM

That range of speeds offers plenty of control to tackle everything from delicate detail work to high-speed cutting and material removal.

This isn’t the fastest rotary tool in HART’s lineup, though. If you want to move higher in performance, check out the HPRL01 rotary grinder tool. You’ll need more space for it, but you’ll be able to run up to 34,000 RPM.

The tool uses a 4V integrated lithium-ion battery but it still only weighs a little more than 1/2 a pound. It recharges via a USB-C cord that connects to the tool’s base.

The housing tapers down in a way that offers several grip options. Hold it around the middle for the best control for applications such as bolt cutting or grip it pencil-style when precision is the name of the game.

When it’s time to change bits, this model is easier than most. Press down the blue collet lock button on the opposite side of the speed slider and twist the collet to tighten or loosen it. You can secure the new bit with just the strength of your hands. There’s no need to use a wrench unless you need a little help to loosen it.

The Bottom Line

HART’s 4V cordless rotary tool is a really convenient model to have around the house or in your tool box. You don’t have any additional cords to manage and the all-in-one design fits into tighter spots well. As we expect from HART, it’s also an excellent value at $49.88. It isn’t featured on our best rotary tools article but is a solid tool nevertheless.
