They offer a combination of access and power that a traditional impact wrench can’t always provide, while still bringing more muscle to the table than standard manual ratchets. Makita’s 18V XLT03 takes that concept and pushes it to the next level with impressive power and an approachable design.

We spent some time with the XLT03 to see how it performs under pressure, so you can decide if it makes the most sense for your toolbox.

Speed and Power

At the heart of this right-angle impact wrench, you have a brushless motor that spins the 3/8-inch anvil up to 3,200 RPM with a max impact rate of 4,000 IPM. On top of that, it also churns out 250 ft-lbs of fastening power and 390 ft-lbs of breakaway power. This means that everything from lug nuts to frozen bolts are well within reach for the XLT03.

The biggest thing to understand is that this is not a cordless ratchet; rather, this is a 90° impact wrench that’s designed for heavier-duty applications.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the XLT03’s speed and power in each mode, and I’ll also include another model from Milwaukee for added comparison. Both models are fast, powerful, and have a lot to offer for Pros.

Interestingly, Makita’s numbers are higher than many of the mid-torque impact wrenches we included in our last roundup. Granted, the torque specs are much lower, but all that speed really comes in handy when running out longer bolts or when you’re working at odd angles. We’ll see whether these elevated numbers have an impact on the XLT03’s performance.

Hands-On Impressions

To get a hands-on feel for this specialized tool, I wanted to highlight it performance with a show of strength. With that said, I also wanted to evaluate the Auto-Stop modes and run one of our standard impact tool tests.

For my test, I tightened the 1 1/2-inch semi-truck lug nuts on our bolt break rig to 250 ft-lbs using our Gearwrench Electronic Torque Wrench and timed how long it takes to loosen all eight nuts. Now, this is obviously not the most traditional application for this type of tool, but it let me gauge the overall vibration level and see how well it performed under pressure.

The Makita XLT03 finished this test with a total time of 46.63 seconds—that’s an average of 5.83 seconds per nut. All things considered, that’s pretty respectable for this class, especially given the odd application. Where I see this tool shining is definitely under the hood, but its speed and power level are also perfect for demanding suspension work.

The vibration level was pretty consistent with what I’ve experienced with some of Makita’s larger pistol-grip impact wrenches. It’s definitely there, but not overwhelming or uncomfortable, so hand fatigue won’t set in too quickly during those long workdays.

Makita equipped the XLT03 with two Auto-Stop modes. When rotating clockwise (right), the impact force is the same as in Mode 1, and the tool stops automatically as soon as it begins to impact. Similarly, when running counterclockwise (left), the impact force is the same as in Mode 3, and the motor stops automatically as soon as it stops impacting and the fastener breaks free. Both modes are very useful in their respective roles and help prevent overtightening of fasteners or the loss of a nut or bolt in a crowded engine bay.

Personally, I think Makita’s Auto-Stop modes are some of the most successful implementations I’ve encountered on an impact wrench. They work exactly as they’re described and offer a ton of control during delicate applications.

Size and Weight

The Makita XLT03 weighs 3.25 pounds as a bare tool, 4.0 pounds with the recommended 2.0Ah battery, and 4.61 pounds with a 5.0Ah battery. After a little hands-on time, I found that the larger battery gave this impact wrench a much more balanced feel, making it easier to maneuver and less front-heavy.

This is right in line with what we experienced with the Ridgid 18V Right Angle Impact Wrench, which shares a very similar profile and design. I also love the grip ergonomics—the shape contours well to my hand, and the controls are easily accessible.

The XLT03’s head measures 2.2 inches wide, and it’s 3.1 inches deep if you include the anvil. This is fine if you have plenty of room to work, but it may still present some issues if you’re working in tighter spaces. If space is limited, you might be better off going with one of Makita’s cordless ratchets, which are a little slimmer and less bulky. With that said, you will give up some brute strength in exchange for a smaller profile.

Should You Buy It?

The Makita XLT03 is an interesting addition to the 18V LXT lineup, especially for Pros who regularly work in the automotive and mechanical trades. It’s not trying to replace a traditional impact wrench or a cordless ratchet. Rather, it lives in the middle ground, giving you more power than a ratchet while maintaining the advantages of a right-angle design.

I was particularly impressed with Makita’s Auto-Stop modes. They work as advertised and provide a level of control that’s genuinely useful when you’re working around an engine bay or other areas where losing a fastener can turn a simple job into a frustrating one. The combination of speed, power, and controlled operation also makes the XLT03 well-suited for a variety of other demanding automotive and heavy-equipment maintenance applications.

The main limitation for me is its size. While the right-angle configuration gives you more access than a conventional impact wrench, the head is still fairly substantial. So, if you’re routinely working in extremely tight spaces, a cordless ratchet might still be the better option, even though you do miss out on some of that raw power.

However, for folks already on the LXT platform who need a dedicated right-angle impact wrench, the XLT03 makes a lot of sense. It delivers a strong combination of power, speed, and control without trying to be something it isn’t. If your work frequently takes you under the hood or into tight mechanical spaces where a traditional impact wrench simply won’t fit, this is a tool that’s worth having in your arsenal.

The Makita 18V LXT XLT03 retails for $279 as a bare tool and comes with a 3-year limited warranty. It’s also available with a 1/2-inch friction ring and pin detent anvil for the same price.
