Random orbit sanders take many forms and power sources from a palm grip to full size two-handed and corded to cordless and pneumatic. The new Makita BO6050J 6-Inch Random Orbit Sander falls into the category of two-handed corded models appropriate for both wood sanding and auto detailing.
The sander features two modes to switch between sanding and polishing operations. The Random Orbit mode is for fine sanding and buffing. A Random Orbit with Forced Rotation mode kicks up the power for aggressive sanding and polishing. The 7/32-inch orbit diameter helps the user deliver a smooth, swirl-free finish.
Makita went with a hook and loop sanding disk attachment system that users will be very familiar with. Changing out the backing pad is completely tool-free. A removable pad protector is in place to protect work surfaces.
The Makita BO6050J 6-Inch Random Orbit Sander features Makita’s ergonomic design considerations. It has a barrel grip and side handle to help the user maintain control under load. The lock-on trigger helps reduce fatigue on longer operations and a soft-start feature gets you started smoothly.
To help control dust, Makita designed a through-the-pad dust collection system with integrated dust port and dust extraction channel attachment for use with your dust extractor.
“Users can shift from aggressive sanding and polishing to fine sanding and buffing by simply turning the dial. Carpenters and woodworkers will appreciate the improved dust extraction and top wood sanding performance with up to 13,600 sanding strokes per minute. For automotive and boat detailers, the variable speed allows for an increased range of random orbits from 1,600 to 6,800 per minute to match the speed to the polishing application.”

This is a pretty nice tool. I have a friend who swears by them. I personally prefer a conventional palm/ mouse sander as you can sand to the edges of what you are doing. But you certainly can’t fault Makita for the quality of their tools. I have one of their circular saws and have been cutting things for years with no hassles.
If only it was a different shade of green and came in a t-loc. Does anyone know if the dust holes are the same configuration as Festool?
