Craftsman, EX-CELL, Porter-Cable, Pro-Air II Air Compressors Recall

There is a voluntary recall of several brands of popular compressors sold between 2003 and 2008, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The CPSC is asking consumers to stop using the recalled products
immediately and call DeVilbiss Air Power Co. or Sears for a free repair kit. About 460,000 of these were sold in the US and the OEM is DeVilbiss Air Power Co., who makes these in Jackson, TN. Because of the design of the air slots at the end of the motor, the air compressor motor can overheat, posing a fire hazard. Not all of these compressors are in need of service and DeVilbiss provided a pretty easy way to check if yours requires it.

The company has so far received 10 reports of compressor motors overheating, but no injuries have been reported. The
recalled compressors were sold under the Craftsman, EX-CELL, Porter-Cable and Pro-Air II brand names. The diagram above is helpful, but you can also use your model number to identify a qualifying product. The model number on each unit is located on the unit name plate on the tank.

Consumers with a compressor manufactured before the dates shown, but who had a motor replaced after July 25, 2003, should still check the end cap. The end cap is visible from underneath the motor cover as shown above.

The compressors were originally sold under the EX-CELL, Porter-Cable and Pro-Air II-brands and available through industrial and construction distributors from July 2003 through December 2008 for between $259 and $299. Craftsman-brand compressors were sold at Sears stores nationwide from July 2003 through December 2008 for between $279 and $329.
