Skilsaw Orbital Action Circular Saw Review

Skilsaw Orbital Action Circular Saw

Orbital action has been the big determiner in finding the best reciprocating saws on the market—at least in terms of cutting speed. In a truly game-changing move, Skilsaw released the SPT 76 WLO-01 circular sidewinder saw with orbital action. This new Skilsaw orbital action circular saw uses an elliptical motion to rough cut faster than ever before.

The motion of the Skilsaw Orbital Action Circular Saw allows it to cut faster and with a much more aggressive posture than its static counterparts. Eventually, more and more manufacturers will incorporate orbital action into their rough-cut framing saws.

Skilsaw Orbital Action Circular Saw Features

As may be obvious from the orbital action on this circular saw, it’s meant for rough cuts only. Skilsaw claims 30% faster cutting speeds due to the advanced orbital movement of the blade. Combining a “stroke” action with the 5300 RPM blade speed makes for super-fast cuts.

Aside from the orbital action improvements, Skilsaw has kept the weight of the SPT-199 LTO down by utilizing a magnesium shoe and blade guard. The maximum cut depth is still 2-7/16″ at 90-degrees and 1-7/8″ at 45-degrees. You can even bevel up to 56 degrees if needed. Even with the new orbital mechanism, this Skilsaw sidewinder weighs just 8.8 lbs.

In terms of oscillation speed, don’t expect this to function like a reciprocating saw. It’s a slower movement designed to work well with the steady advance of a saw blade through the workpiece. The cutting action is more of an accelerated pulse that constantly pushes you through the cut. At times, it almost feels like the saw has cruise control.

Using the Skilsaw Orbital Action Circular Saw

Overall, a saw that uses orbital action is going to have more vibration. As the first of its kind, there’s really nothing to compare it to, however. With that said, cuts were still manageable, though I’d like the option to dial back the orbital action. Right now, you can either engage or disengage the feature.

Cutting in 2X lumber worked well. The saw has a sort of jittery feel while you cut—but, man, it’s FAST. Ripping 3/4-inch plywood and OSB also felt extremely quick. Skilsaw recommends leaving the blade extended all the way down to get the most efficient cut.

I have to say, the orbital action on this circular saw is really impressive. You have to try it out and see for yourself. Once you do, I think you’ll never go back to a traditional saw again.
