Ryobi’s PBLRS02 Second-Generation HP Brushless Reciprocating Saw Has a Wide Appeal

Ryobi continues to expand its cordless tool lineup with the release of the PBLRS02 18V ONE+ HP Brushless Reciprocating Saw, which is an upgrade from its predecessor, the PBLRS01. It sports a few new features and improved cutting power to help you get the job done right, but should you upgrade to this new model? We’re going to review the key specs and features so you can decide if it’s the right tool for you!

Ryobi PBLRS02 Reciprocating Saw Performance

  • No-Load Speed: 3,200 SPM
  • Stroke Length: 1 1/4 in.
  • Runtime: 470 cuts per charge

Cutting Speed

The Ryobi PBLRS02 is powered by a brushless motor that churns out 3,200 SPM accompanied by a 1 1/4-inch stroke length. What’s interesting is that these specs are identical to the previous model, the PBLRS01. However, Ryobi claims that this saw is their fastest cutting saw yet—25% faster than its predecessor.

To achieve these higher cutting speeds, it’s likely that Ryobi equipped this new model with a stronger, more robust motor and an upgraded electronics package that can take advantage of the High Performance and High Performance Edge batteries. With that said, we were able to confirm that this saw features a beefier saw bar, which helps it withstand more rigorous applications.

For those of you waiting for a selectable orbital action, you’ll have to wait a little longer. This model doesn’t have it.

Vibration Level

Vibration control is an area that’s hard to get right with reciprocating saws. By their very nature, the reciprocating action of the tools is more violent and is known to transfer more felt vibration to your hands and arms.

In this case, Ryobi did a pretty good job of keeping the vibration to a manageable level. It’s not quite as low as what we’ve experienced with more premium models we’ve tested, like the Makita 40V max XGT GJR02, but it’s a big step forward for DIYers and value-minded Pros who don’t want to spend that kind of money.

Ryobi PBLRS02 Reciprocating Saw Design Notes

Ryobi PBLRS02 Reciprocating Saw Profile
  • Model: Ryobi PBLRS02
  • Power Source: Ryobi 18V battery
  • Weight: 6.56 lbs (bare tool), 8.2 lbs (with 4.0Ah battery)
  • Tool Length: 18-3/4 in.

Size and Weight

The Ryobi PBLRS02 weighs in at 6.56 pounds as a bare tool, 8.2 pounds with the recommended 4.0Ah battery, and measures 18-3/4 inches from tip to tail. The tool body is draped in a generous amount of textured rubber overmold which helps reduce some of the overall vibration level.

Blade Changes

Like the previous model, Ryobi stuck with an easy-to-use blade release lever. When you’re ready to swap out blades, simply lift up on the lever and insert the new blade. It’s much easier than having to reach in and twist a blade release on the shaft.

Unlike some of the premium models we’ve tested, the PBLRS02 doesn’t automatically eject the old blade, so you’ll need to be mindful of heat buildup if you want to switch right after you finish cutting.

Folding Rafter Hook

One of the new features on this saw is the folding rafter hook, but one big difference from most models is that it doesn’t come pre-installed. While it’s a minor inconvenience, it gives you the option to install the hook or disregard it altogether if you don’t need it.

Additional Features

  • Non-marring pivoting shoe
  • On-board LED work light
  • Compatible with all Ryobi 18V batteries

Ryobi PBLRS02 Reciprocating Saw Price

The Ryobi PBLRS02 retails for $139 as a bare tool and comes with a 3-year warranty. At the time of writing this, there are no kit options available, but it is compatible with all Ryobi 18V batteries.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the Ryobi PBLRS02 makes a strong case as a value-packed reciprocating saw with solid performance and thoughtful upgrades over its predecessor. It delivers respectable cutting power, improved durability, helpful features like an LED light and pivoting shoe, and decent vibration control considering its price point.

As I mentioned earlier, the PBLRS02 is a compelling option for DIYers and value-minded Pros, but it is lacking when it comes to more premium features, like orbital action. So, if you’re tackling serious demo work, this might not be your best option. However, if you’re on the hunt for a reliable saw with confident cutting power that won’t break the bank, the PBLRS02 is a great option.
