Skil Folding Hex Key Lets You Leave the Allen Wrench Behind

In recent years, Skil has dipped its toes into the 4V market, with a few rechargeable screwdrivers in its roster. Now for 2026, the brand has released four new 4V rechargeable tools, including the new Skil Folding Hex Key. Since this tool is close in concept to Skil screwdrivers of the past, I wanted to take a deeper look at which jobs it’s a good fit for to help you decide if it’s worth the upgrade from your manual allen wrench.

Skil Folding Hex Key Overview

Skil claims the HK0001 is the industry’s first powered hex key. In design, it takes a similar form factor to a manual folding hex key set and gives it a battery-powered upgrade for easy furniture assembly, fastening, and more.

With 8.85 in-lbs of torque at the top end and speeds topping out at 150 RPM, it’s definitely meant for light-duty assembly. I can see this tool getting the most use in jobs like putting together ready-to-build furniture, small household repairs, and quick fastening applications. If you happen to torque out before your fastener is fully flush, you can also use the tool manually to finish driving it in.

The controls consist of a simple two-button forward-reverse function. Using the tool in either direction activates the onboard LED work light to help you see your work surface, which is useful in low-light areas like closets and cabinets. A battery indicator above the buttons tells you when it’s time to recharge the internal 4V battery, and it includes a USB-C charging cable to keep you topped up. Skil tells us it takes 2.5 hours to fully recharge.

Unlike most powered screwdrivers on the market, this tool lets you adjust your driving angle. A button on the side of the tool lets you set your working angle to 90°, 135°, or 180°. To pivot the bit, press and hold the button and adjust to your preferred angle.

Bits

The Skil folding hex key includes either an 11-piece bit set or a 27-piece bit set. The configuration we’re discussing comes with 11 bits, which span a variety of bit types and sizes, including Phillips-head, slotted, square, and hex bits. It features a 1/4-inch hex collet, so it’s also compatible with universal 1/4-inch hex bits.

Hex Bits

The bits are split between two 5-slot bit holders, and one holder can be stored onboard. The onboard holder folds out for easy bit selection and tucks back into the tool to keep the bits out of the way while you work.

However, in future design updates, I’d like to see the ability to store both bit holders onboard at the same time. The tool holds up to 6 bits at a time (assuming you store one bit in the tool’s collet), so you still need to keep track of the spare bit holder separately from the tool.

Skil Folding Hex Key Price

There are a few different configurations for this hex key, each including a variety of bits and attachments. For $49.99, you get the tool, an 11-piece bit set, and an optional hand strap. Skil also offers a kit that includes a 27-piece bit set, though the price has not been published yet at the time of writing.

Should You Buy It?

At just under $50, this is an inexpensive upgrade that might be worth it for those who are tired of tiny hex keys that come with every piece of ready-to-build furniture. Personally, I dislike the hassle of manually driving hex bits, so this powered option is a real boost that saves time and frustration during assembly. It’s also more than just a hex key, as it includes an assortment of other bits for various other fastening and repair applications.

The HK0001 may have lower torque than something like the Skil Twist 2.0 cordless screwdriver, but many assembly-required furniture pieces are made with lower-quality material that’s prone to splitting and chipping, so the torque levels here help prevent damage. If you’re ready to ditch the cheap metal tools and you don’t need the bells and whistles of a higher-torque solution, this is a tool worth considering.
