In partnership with Hilti
When layout is in your job description, lasers are part of your life. Often, it feels like you have to make a compromise. You can’t see the beam very far. It’s not durable enough to withstand real jobsite environments. Setup takes forever. Or perhaps you’re tired of constantly replacing batteries.
Hilti understands what professional tradesmen need to do the job right and efficiently, and they’ve been making jobsite lasers for decades. One of their most recent innovations is the PM 50 MG Multi-Line Laser, a 3 x 360° layout tool designed to offer Pros a complete solution. I connected with members of Hilti’s product team to learn more about what it has to offer and how it can make a difference on your next job.
A Brighter Beam

One of the most significant pain points professional tradesmen deal with on their line lasers is visibility. Most of them do a great job up close, but when you’re laying out track 100+ feet long, it’s frustrating and time-consuming to keep repositioning the laser just to see the line.
As Hilti’s brightest line laser, the PM 50MG is built to solve that problem. It starts by swapping a red laser line for green. That’s especially beneficial indoors, where the brighter green lines are easier to see across large rooms, open floor plans, and long layout runs. It’s not just a contrast thing; there’s real science behind it. Green wavelengths are easier for the human eye to see, so they naturally stand out better when you’re working at longer ranges. That increased visibility is particularly valuable in bright indoor environments and areas with significant ambient light. Whether you’re laying out wall track, installing ceilings, aligning MEP systems, or performing interior finishing work, the brighter green beam helps you work more efficiently by reducing setup time and minimizing laser repositioning.
In terms of range, you can see the PM 50MG’s beam up to 130 feet away from the laser. Since each of the three diodes casts a 360° beam, the lines can cover a visible diameter of more than 260 feet with the laser at the center.
You’re not stuck if you need to work beyond that range, though. Hilti’s electronic receiver can detect the beam from more than 200 feet away, giving you a full diameter of 427 feet to work with.
Dialed-in Accuracy

Seeing the beam is one thing, but if it isn’t accurate, it doesn’t do you much good. Fortunately, that’s not a problem for the PM 50MG. It comes pre-calibrated and rated with an accuracy level of ±0.12 inches over 33 feet. This matches the industry standard for professional layout jobs.
Hilti’s design includes several elements to ensure you can get the laser on target more easily. It starts with a self-leveling range of ±4.25°. Once you have the laser positioned in the general area of your target, the diodes automatically level themselves and stabilize in about 3 seconds.
From there, Hilti built in a micro-adjustment pivoting base. With the turn of a knob, you can slowly pivot the laser left or right up to 30°. It’s a huge timesaver that helps you precisely align against your target by avoiding under- or overshooting it and reducing how much the beam bounces around while you make adjustments.
There are a couple of accessories that can make your life easier. One is Hilti’s PMA 20 tripod. It features the adjustable legs and height you expect from a laser tripod, and it’s built to thrive in jobsite environments. Plus, it folds up to a compact size, making storage and transportation easier.
The second is Hilti’s PMA 100 mounting bracket. It significantly expands your mounting versatility with a combination of a magnetic back, a clip, and a screw/nail hole. Once you have it set up, there’s a fine-tune knob for the height to help you dial in perfect alignment with your target.
Paired with the micro-adjustment base on the laser, both of these accessories improve the speed of your setup. For many Pros, both the tripod and mounting bracket are crucial for layout jobs.
Jobsite-Ready Build

Jobsites aren’t cozy, comfortable places to work, and electronic devices can have short lifespans in those environments if they’re not protected properly. Dirt, dust, mud, construction debris, and inclement weather all pose significant risks. Because line lasers are frequently moved throughout the day, accidental bumps, drops, and tip-overs are simply part of life on an active jobsite. That’s why durability is important.
Hilti has been a leader in innovative jobsite laser protection for a long time, with features like shock-absorbing heads and handles on their rotary lasers. That mindset applies to more compact line lasers as well, and the PM 50MG Multi-Line Laser offers several layers of physical protection.
Rubber dampers cover the diodes, absorbing some of the shock from drops and impacts. Internally, shock absorbers inside the housing further isolate impact force from the diodes. The PM 50MG is also built to withstand demanding jobsite conditions, with an IP54 rating that helps protect against dust and water exposure.
Together, these features help keep the laser in service and reduce the likelihood of downtime for recalibration.
All-Day Runtime and Then Some

The final piece of the puzzle is that the PM 50MG is compatible with Hilti’s Nuron battery platform. It runs on the same 22V batteries as Hilti’s cordless power tools, so there’s no need to buy into another battery system.
That’s convenient and helps save you some money, but there’s more to it. Early line lasers relied on alkaline batteries for power. As they advanced to rechargeable lithium-ion designs, most used a 12V battery while others opted for an internal power source. Regardless, runtime has historically been an issue. Most batteries couldn’t offer all-day runtime, and more power-hungry green lasers made it even more of a pain point.
That’s why a line laser on the Nuron platform makes so much sense for Pros. Even the most compact battery has higher capacity and runtime than the previous options. Hilti’s B22-55 battery can run this laser up to 15 hours, and the B22-85 offers up to 24 hours of runtime. That’s legitimate multi-day runtime for many tradesmen.
Ready to Upgrade Your Line Laser?
In developing the PM 50MG Multi-Line Laser, Hilti addressed visibility, accuracy, and durability to offer professional tradesmen a line laser they can count on day in and day out. Powering it on the Nuron battery system took it to another level of convenience with platform compatibility and all-day runtime.
