Get Healthier Grass and Minimize Thatch With Craftsman’s Walk-Behind Dethatcher

If your grass has seen better days, there are a number of solutions you could try to regain its former glory. Dethatching and scarifying is a great place to start, and a few cordless power options exist on the market for that process. One of them is the Craftsman V20 Dethatcher, which claims to help get your lawn back on track. I’m going over the big picture of what this tool has to offer and how it could factor into your lawn care routine.

Craftsman V20 Dethatcher: Overview

Craftsman V20 Dethatcher

The Craftsman V20 CMCOE210P2 dethatcher/scarifier is one of a handful of cordless options that combine both functions. It features a dethatcher and a scarifier to remove thatch build-up, improve airflow, and encourage grass growth on your lawn. A DIY-friendly, tool-free attachment system lets you switch between dethatching and scarifying easily.

The dethatching blade pulls dead grass and other lawn debris trapped between the grass and soil up to the surface. The springs reach between 3 and 6 millimeters deep, depending on the thickness of the thatch. The scarifying blade goes deeper into the ground (around 6 to 12 millimeters deep) to slice through the top layer of compacted soil and dirt to remove debris, improve airflow, and prepare your lawn for seeding.

Craftsman recommends performing this process as needed to improve your lawn’s health and promote grass growth. In most cases, dethatching and scarifying are only necessary once per year.

With either attachment connected, the debris flows into the 50L collection bag to remove it from your lawn’s surface. It can also be used without the collection bag, in which case, it directs debris out of the rear discharge chute.

As part of Craftsman’s V20 lineup, it utilizes V20 batteries. Like some of Craftsman’s other 20V lawn care tools, it requires two batteries running simultaneously for power. The kit includes two 5.0Ah packs, which Craftsman claims provide a runtime of up to 45 minutes. This is ideal for small to medium-sized lawns up to around 1/4-acre.

The handle folds down for compact storage to tuck it away in your shed or garage until the next time you need it. Since it’s a seasonal tool and not something you’d typically use several times a year, the compact storage is a real benefit to keep it out of the way of the tools you use in your normal lawn care routine.

Craftsman V20 Dethatcher Price

This dethatcher retails for $399 as a kit and includes two 5.0Ah V20 batteries, two chargers, a dethatcher attachment, a scarifier attachment, and a 50L collection bag. Craftsman backs your purchase with a 3-year warranty.

Should You Buy It?

Craftsman has several lawn care solutions across its V20 lineup, spanning most of what you’d need to maintain your lawn. This includes more specialized tools like the V20 Brushless RP dethatcher/scarifier, which is a seasonal solution for removing dead grass and other lawn debris.

While it’s not a tool you’d use every time you mow or trim, it can really help shape up your grass and promote healthy growth by removing thatch and improving airflow to your soil. Its 14-inch swath and 45-minute runtime make this unit ideal for small to medium lawns up to 1/4-acre in size. If you already use Craftsman V20 tools as part of your normal lawn care routine, this model runs on the batteries you have, and the two included batteries can also be swapped into your other tools when the dethatcher is out of season.

However, for those on other brands, it may be worth adding Craftsman into your shed for this more niche tool. If the $399 buy-in isn’t too much of a budget crunch, the Craftsman V20 dethatcher and scarifier could have some real benefits for your lawn.
