Finding the right rotary hammer for a concrete-drilling job doesn’t always mean grabbing the biggest, most powerful model. Compact rotary hammers are often more than enough to drill through concrete or install anchors, especially when working overhead. But while they’re easy to handle, those smaller rotary hammers can’t match the muscle of the bigger, heavier models.

The middle ground between compact, light-duty rotary hammers and heavy-duty, hard-to-handle models is precisely where Hilti designed its newest concrete drill to land. The TE 8-22 rotary hammer was created to make repetitive drilling easier while also reducing vibration, managing unexpected binding, and even controlling dust. We spoke with the product management team at Hilti to learn more about what went into developing its new TE 8-22 and its companion TE DRS-22 onboard dust removal system.

A New Class of Hilti Rotary Hammer

Hilti Nuron TE 8-22 Rotary Hammer

Hilti developed the TE 8-22 as an entirely new addition to its cordless rotary hammer lineup rather than a replacement for the popular TE 6-22. Its design focuses on fast, repetitive drilling in concrete and reinforced concrete. Hilti optimized the TE 8-22 for drilling in the 5/8-inch range, offering more capability than a compact model without the heft of a large rotary hammer.

Here’s how the TE 8-22 compares to other Nuron rotary hammers Pros might consider:

Max Speed1050 RPM1050 RPM1230 RPM
Max Impact Rate5100 IPM5100 IPM4700 IPM

These numbers show that the TE 8-22 has a meaningful step up in performance. The next level is the larger TE 30-22, which is why Hilti describes the TE 8-22 as a versatile option. If you have to switch from drilling small, repetitive holes in formwork to drilling holes for wedge anchors, it allows you to do both without having to switch to a larger rotary hammer. You should be able to work faster and more comfortably, especially when working overhead or drilling holes repetitively.

Reducing Vibration with 3D AVR

The TE 8-22 was designed to reduce operator fatigue, particularly during repetitive drilling. To accomplish this, Hilti developed its 3D Active Vibration Reduction (AVR) system. While traditional AVR systems primarily address vibration in one direction, 3D AVR uses a floating sub-chassis that allows the motor assembly to move independently of the tool’s housing. This helps isolate vibration in all three dimensions, reducing the amount transferred to your hands and arms.

David Walker, a member of Hilti’s product management team, explained that customers often comment on how smoothly the TE 8-22 operates before they even mention its power. When you’re drilling dozens of holes throughout the day, less vibration can mean greater comfort, reduced fatigue, and potentially better productivity during extended drilling sessions.

Protection When the Bit Binds

When a drill bit encounters rebar in reinforced concrete, the bit can jam and twist the rotary hammer violently. The TE 8-22 combats that with its Active Torque Control (ATC) system. When ATC detects a sudden, severe bind, it can stop the tool’s rotation within approximately a quarter turn, according to Hilti. This helps reduce the rotational force that transfers to you, potentially lowering the risk of wrist, arm, and shoulder injuries.

The TE 8-22 also features an Electronic Slip Clutch (ESC) to handle less severe binding issues. Once it detects the bind, it stops both the rotation and the hammering and initiates a small, automatic right-left movement to help free the bit, limiting interruptions and downtime to keep the task on track.

Hilti TE DRS-22: Onboard Dust Collection

Drilling into concrete produces quite a bit of dust that can contain hazardous respirable crystalline silica. Collecting that dust at the hole is an important part of drilling, particularly during repetitive and overhead drilling. Hilti’s TE DRS-22 onboard dust collection attachment is designed to do just that, collecting dust without an external vacuum hose limiting reach.

Since the TE DRS-22 moves with the rotary hammer, it makes moving between holes easier, particularly when drilling overhead. It features a transparent dust box to help you see when it’s full and an onboard LED work light. It’s also compatible with other Hilti rotary hammers, including the TE 4-22 and the TE 6-22.

A Cleaner Way to Empty the Dust Container

Collecting concrete dust is one thing, but emptying a dust container without releasing those particles back into the air presents another challenge. Contractors specifically asked Hilti for an easy way to empty the dust boxes without opening them. To accommodate that request, the TE DRS-22 features an integrated vacuum port that allows you to empty the container without opening it. You connect a compatible vacuum to the port and transfer the dust to the vacuum. This can reduce the direct handling of concrete dust and the potential exposure to respirable silica during disposal.

Built for Repetitive Concrete Drilling

For general contractors, concrete crews, and anchor installers, the TE 8-22 brings several productivity-focused features together in one tool. Its drilling performance, vibration reduction, and binding protection are particularly relevant when you’re drilling repeatedly throughout the workday.

For those applications, Hilti recommends pairing the TE 8-22 with its B 22-195 Nuron battery. According to the company, this combination offers an optimal balance of runtime, drilling performance, and weight, helping you work through demanding jobs without unnecessarily adding bulk. The TE 8-22 is also compatible with other batteries in Hilti’s 22V Nuron platform, giving you flexibility to use batteries you may already have on hand.

A Rotary Hammer Built Around the Whole Job

Drilling speed is only one part of a productive day on concrete. With the TE 8-22, Hilti has also focused on the operator’s experience, from managing vibration during repetitive drilling to responding when a bit unexpectedly binds.

Paired with the TE DRS-22 onboard dust removal attachment, Hilti’s approach extends beyond drilling performance to include dust collection and disposal. The vacuum-assisted emptying system addresses another jobsite challenge: handling collected concrete dust after drilling is finished.

In short, Hilti designed the new TE 8-22 to be its most versatile compact SDS Plus rotary hammer driven by the real needs of professional contractors.
