Bosch 18V String Trimmers GRT18V-40

Battery-powered string trimmers have come a long way, but not all of them are built with the same goal in mind. Some chase maximum power, while others focus on ease of use and efficiency for everyday yard maintenance.

The Bosch GRT18V-40 clearly leans toward the latter. As Bosch steps into the outdoor power equipment space, this trimmer aims to deliver a balanced mix of runtime, comfort, and user-friendly features. The question is whether that approach is enough to stand out in a crowded field—or if it plays things a little too safe.

Pros

  • Excellent runtime
  • Quick-load trimmer head
  • Lightweight design
  • Low vibration
  • Multiple grip positions

Cons

  • Several competitors offer better performance and features at this price
  • Other brands have larger product lines

Bosch 18V String Trimmer Performance

Speed and Power

At its heart, the Bosch GRT18V-40 houses a head-mounted brushless motor that spins up to 5,300 RPM. This is a little slower than many of the 16 and 17-inch models I’ve tested, but it’s right in line with what we expect from entry-level light and medium-duty residential trimmers.

Runtime

Runtime is a sticky subject for battery-powered OPE, but battery efficiency and motor technology have definitely come a long way. For my test, I loaded up one of Bosch’s brand new 8.0Ah tabless batteries to see how long it would run at top speed.

All in, the GRT18V-40 ran for 23 minutes and 28 seconds at max speed. This is a big deal, especially since Bosch is late in bringing landscape maintenance products to market.

Vibration Level

One area where Bosch absolutely nailed it is vibration control. Since this trimmer has a head-mounted motor, there isn’t a drive shaft passing through the middle. You can still feel a little vibration, but it’s very minimal and didn’t cause any discomfort during our testing.

Trimmer Head

Quick-Load Trimmer Head

Bosch paired this string trimmer with a quick-load trimmer head, and that was a smart play. Loading new trimmer line the old-fashioned way is a pain in the butt, so anything that speeds up the process is okay in my book. It holds up to 10 feet of 0.080 or 0.095-inch line, which is more than enough for most trimming tasks.

Size and Weight

With a working weight of 12.25 pounds, the Bosch GRT18V-40 is fairly lightweight when compared to many of the string trimmers we’ve tested. As I mentioned earlier, this trimmer features a head-mounted motor, which gives it a slight forward bias, but I don’t believe it’s a major issue.

Grip and Trigger

Dual Safetys

The big deal on this trimmer is undoubtedly the grip. Bosch put a high priority on versatility—essentially letting you do more jobs with a single tool. For this reason, they equipped this trimmer with an oversized trigger and a pair of safety buttons that sit on top of either end of the trigger area.

Why? Versatility! With this setup, you can easily trim around landscaping features as you normally would, then flip the trimmer 90-degrees to edge your walkways. This is a common practice for folks who don’t have a dedicated edger, and Bosch’s design makes the whole process a little safer and easier.

Additional Features

  • Folding Guide Bar: Helps you maintain a consistent trimming distance
  • Tool-Free D-Grip: Quickly reposition the foregrip to match your comfort level

Bosch 18V String Trimmer Price

The Bosch GRT18V-40 retails for $219 as a bare tool and $349 as a kit with charger and a tabless 8.0Ah battery. Bosch backs this trimmer with a 5-year warranty on the tool and charger, and a 3-year warranty on the battery.

Should You Buy It?

The Bosch GRT18V-40 isn’t the most powerful or feature-rich string trimmer on the market—and that makes it hard to recommend at this price unless you already own Bosch products. It’s a great string trimmer, but it faces stiff competition from brands with much larger product lines.

Focusing on delivering a smooth, user-friendly experience with solid runtime, you do get low vibration and thoughtful design features that make everyday trimming easy. The head-mounted motor keeps vibration to a minimum, while the quick-load head and versatile grip design simplify common tasks like edging and line changes.

It’s not the tool you’ll reach for to tackle overgrown properties or heavy brush. But for homeowners looking for a lightweight, efficient trimmer that’s easy to handle and comfortable to use, Bosch makes a strong first impression in the OPE space.

If they continue building on this foundation, Bosch could become a serious player in cordless lawn care.
