Hilti AG 500-20SE Angle Grinder Elevates Power, Performance, and Safety
For the last few years, Hilti has been expanding its 22V Nuron lineup with some new and exciting tools, many of which were adaptations from corded tools. However, today, we’re actually focusing on the corded Hilti AG 500-20SE 14-amp Angle Grinder, which boasts some competitive ratings and useful tech. So, the question we want to answer is this: Are corded grinders still relevant as the cordless revolution continues gaining ground? Let’s find out!
Hilti AG 500-20SE Angle Grinder Performance

- Max No-Load Speed: 9400 RPMs
- Speed Settings: 6
- Wheel Diameter: 4.5/5 in.
- Trigger Type: Slide Switch
- Power Output: 14 amps
Speed and Power
The Hilti AG 500- 20SE features a 14-amp motor and six speed settings, ranging from 3,000 to 9,400 RPMs. These speeds give you a lot of versatility for cutting and grinding applications. During our testing, I was able to apply significant pressure while grinding without stalling out the motor. That’s not to say it didn’t slow down, but the motor never quit!
This grinder is compatible with 4.5 and 5-inch grinding and cutting discs.

Rather than a variable speed trigger, Hilti opted for a locking slide switch and a digital speed control panel located near the cord. This system is a little clunky compared to something like a speed control dial, but this design reduces the chance that you’ll accidentally change speeds while you’re working.

If you’re not a fan of slide switches, Hilti also offers a paddle switch version (AG 500-20D). However, that model is equipped with a single-speed motor that operates at 9,400 RPMs, so you don’t get the speed control our test model has.
3D Active Torque Control

The overall performance level is right in line with what we expect from Hilti, but the true star of the show here is the 3D Active Torque Control (ATC). We’ve seen this tech on Hilti’s cordless tools, such as the SF 10W-22 Drill Driver, and it’s an absolute must-have feature if you’re serious about safety.
The ATC system utilizes internal sensors that monitor the tool’s motion. If these sensors detect any sudden rotational force in the tool body, the power is immediately cut off, reducing the risk of injury from kickback if your wheel binds up.
On The Grind

We put this grinder to work on a small project here at our shop as we prepared to modify one of our testing rigs. This mainly involved cutting some 1-inch steel tubing and grinding the edges in preparation for welding. Overall, the tool delivered solid performance and was very easy to handle and operate.
Hilti AG 500-20SE Angle Grinder Design Notes

- Model: Hilti AG 500-20SE
- Power Source: 120V AC
- Weight: 6.25 lbs
- Cord Length: 13 ft.
Size and Weight
Looks-wise, Hilti didn’t stray too far from the norm in terms of design. The barrel grip is smooth, but there is a small section of rubber overmolding on the top to enhance comfort and safety. All in, this grinder weighs 6.25 pounds, including the side handle, and measures 13 5/8 inches in length.
Kwik Lock Nut

One standout feature on this grinder is Hilti’s Kwik Lock tool-free arbor nut. Now you can leave the spanner wrench behind and change out discs in a matter of seconds. This design is very similar to Metabo’s M-Quick system, which garnered a good reputation with our team for its ease of use.
The process is simple. Start by pressing the spindle lock and threading the Kwik Lock nut clockwise until it’s tight. Then, firmly turn the grinding wheel by hand to ensure it’s tight. To release it, press and hold the spindle lock and turn the nut counterclockwise. This requires very little effort, but if it is too tight to release by hand, you can always use a spanner wrench.

Hilti also included a standard flange nut and spanner wrench if you prefer a more traditional look.
Additional Features
- Tool-free adjustable guard
- Removable cutting wheel shroud
- Large vents for improved cooling
Hilti AG 500-20SE Angle Grinder Price
This angle grinder retails for $369 and is backed by a 20-year warranty from Hilti. If you’re on Hilti’s Fleet Management service, the tool is $38.85 per month.
The Bottom Line
So, to answer the question we posed in the beginning, I absolutely believe corded grinders are still a cornerstone tool for mechanics, fabricators, and welders. Runtime will always be a pain point for cordless tools that draw a lot of power, like grinders, but if you’re primarily working near an established power source, corded is the way to go.
The Hilti AG 500-20SE stands out as a high-performing, user-friendly angle grinder that doesn’t compromise on safety or functionality. Features like the 3D Active Torque Control and the Kwik Lock flange nut blend innovation with practicality, making it an excellent choice for Pros. The overall package delivers the quality and performance we’ve come to expect from Hilti, and makes a strong case for corded grinders across the board.
