Makita HRH01ZX2 18V X2 1-inch Rotary Hammer Preview

In a sense, the system reminds us of the battery belt pack we reviewed some time ago. The idea is that, with additional batteries, the 18V platform has the ability to adequately power tools like rotary hammers and miter saws to the levels required. Also, with dual 18V batteries, tools that might be OK with 18V, but where run-time is diminished below the point of being practical, now become viable options for cordless applications. With twin battery packs the HRH01ZX2, like the Makita featured in our recent circular saw shootout, can actually take on tasks where formerly only a corded rotary hammer would suffice.

This is kind of brilliant in that Makita is leveraging an existing, popular platform rather than set up (or continue) a third completely different system. With dual-pack battery chargers certain to be on the horizon, I think the direction the Makita HRH01ZX2 18V X2 rotary hammer is taking is a strong one—and likely to be imitated elsewhere.

As a tool, the new Makita HRH01ZX2 18V X2 rotary hammer delivers up to twice the drilling speed 0-1,200 RPM of 18V rotary hammers, so it will drill up to three times more holes. The HRH01ZX2 also has a 1” drilling capacity  and accepts SDS-Plus bits. It delivers 0-4,800 BPM and a full 3.0 Joules of impact energy. The new Makita Rotary Hammer also shares several features with its 18V counterparts, including 3-mode operation, one-touch sliding chuck, and a torque limiting clutch engineered to prevent gear damage by automatically disengaging gears if the bit binds.

The Makita HRH01ZX2 also has an LED battery level indicator to show the remaining charge level for each 18V battery and a vibration-absorbing handle makes this compact , 14-1/4” long tool easy to use. The batteries also charge in just 30 minutes, giving you some serious run-time potential if you have a couple sets of batteries on-hand.
