We just wrapped up our latest round of head-to-head testing with mid-sized wet dry vacs, and the results were pretty interesting. The star of today’s show is the DeWalt 12-Gallon Wet Dry Vacuum (model DXV12P), which looks like a top performer in this class. We put this vacuum through a series of tests to see how it would perform under pressure, and help you decide if it’s a class leader.

Suction Power

At the heart of the DXV12P is a 5.5 peak horsepower motor capable of producing up to 110 CFM of airflow. On top of that, DeWalt tells us this vac is rated to lift 70 inches of water (IOW).

That’s plenty of suction for common cleanup tasks, including sawdust, wood chips, drywall debris, vehicle detailing, and general workshop messes. The large 2-1/2-inch hose diameter also helps prevent clogging when you’re collecting larger debris, and makes it a good fit for dust collection on table saws and miter saws.

Wet Cleanup

Like any good shop vac, the DXV12P handles liquid cleanup just as well as dry debris.

DeWalt includes a large integrated drain plug that makes emptying collected water significantly easier than tipping the entire vacuum over. While this isn’t exactly an earth-shattering design, it’s most certainly practical. And if you’ve ever tried dumping several gallons of water from a full canister, you’ll appreciate it immediately.

Blower Function

Another useful feature on the DXV12P is its integrated blower port. Once again, not mind-blowing or particularly uncommon, but it can be very useful.

To use it, simply move the hose to the exhaust side to clear sawdust and other lightweight debris from your tool crevices, workbench, or garage floor with ease. It’s not a replacement for a dedicated blower, but it adds another layer of versatility for occasional cleanup work.

To put this vacuum to the test, we set up a series of common tasks to see how the DXV12P performs against the competition. We brought in comparable models from Harbor Freight and Ridgid. Before we get into the testing and results, here’s a quick breakdown of each test:

Now that we’ve seen the tests, let’s meet the competitors:

Even though there’s some variance between these three vacs, they’re close competitors in price and among shoppers. With that in mind, let’s look at how the dust shook out.

Test Results and Analysis

Looking at the data, DeWalt commands a strong lead throughout our tests. Even when it didn’t outright win a test, it was still competitive.

The DXV12P delivered confident suction power across the board; however, we did see some struggles when picking up the larger debris. The hose clogged once or twice as we were working, and higher CFM could help. If you decide this is the shop vac for you, just slow down a little and allow the vacuum to collect the debris in a more metered sense.

Overall, we declared DeWalt as our winner thanks to its success in our testing, the broad accessory suite, and the fact that it was the quietest model in our lineup (and it’s not even the StealthSonic model, which is even quieter).

With that said, these tests came down to a photo finish between Ridgid and DeWalt, so the model you choose may simply come down to personal preference or where you like to shop.

Size and Mobility

The DXV12P lands in a pretty good middle ground for shop vacs. The 12-gallon drum offers enough capacity for extended cleanup sessions while remaining manageable enough to move around a cramped garage, workshop, or jobsite.

It features four 360° swiveling casters that help the vac roll smoothly over concrete floors and around obstacles. Like most shop vacs, the wheels aren’t designed to traverse bare soil, grass, or stairs, though.

The sturdy top handle makes loading and unloading a breeze. Plus, it doubles as a cord wrap.

Hose and Accessory Management

One area where DeWalt deserves some serious praise is its hose and accessory management.

The DXV12P includes a dedicated accessory storage bag mounted directly to the canister. This gives you a convenient place to store your spare nozzles, extension wands, and other accessories together. It’s a simple solution, but one that helps prevent your attachments from disappearing into crowded drawers or getting scattered around the shop. If you’re anything like me, this is a Godsend.

Another one of my favorite features on this vac is the rubber hose retention strap. This allows you to wrap the hose around the top of the vacuum and secure it in place between uses. It’s just one more element of convenience that saves you some frustration in the end.

Filter Options

The included cartridge filter is washable and reusable, helping reduce long-term replacement costs.

For folks who regularly deal with fine dust and debris, DeWalt offers optional high-efficiency and HEPA filters. That’s a worthwhile consideration for woodworking shops, drywall work, or any environment where fine particulate collection is a priority.

Should You Buy It?

The DeWalt DXV12P succeeds because it focuses on the fundamentals. It offers strong suction, a practical capacity, excellent mobility, and a broad accessory suite that allows you to tackle most cleanup jobs from the get-go.

While DeWalt didn’t introduce any groundbreaking technology, that’s not really the point. The DXV12P is designed to be an all-purpose shop vacuum that can move from weekend garage cleanup to the jobsite to the detailing shop without missing a beat while keeping its price in check.

If you’re looking for a mid-size wet/dry vacuum that balances power, capacity, and convenience, the DeWalt DXV12P deserves a spot near the top of your shortlist. It may not be flashy, but it’s got it where it counts.
