If you own Kobalt yard tools that use 24V Kobalt-branded batteries with a USB-C charging port, there’s a chance that they may pose a fire risk. Greenworks (which manufactures outdoor power equipment for Kobalt) has issued a recall for 24V USB-C Kobalt batteries after over 30 reports of smoke, sparking, or catching fire under certain circumstances.

If you’re on Kobalt’s 24V or 48V OPE platforms, I’ll walk you through what Greenworks and Kobalt are asking you to do to keep you safe and obtain replacement batteries for free.

Kobalt Battery Recall: Affected Models

kobalt battery recall

This recall involves Kobalt outdoor power tools that use 24V Kobalt-branded batteries with a USB-C charging port. The recall is not for the tools themselves, but the USB-C-enabled batteries, which can pose a risk of injury when using the USB-C charging function. Non-USB-capable batteries are not affected by this recall and do not need to be returned.

The recall notice states that the affected batteries are as follows:

  • Kobalt 24V 3.0Ah battery
  • Kobalt 24V 4.0Ah battery
  • Kobalt 24V 5.0Ah battery
  • Kobalt 24V 6.0Ah battery
  • Kobalt 24V 8.0Ah battery

These batteries come in kits with select Kobalt 24V and 48V yard power tools, including trimmers, blowers, mowers, chainsaws, and pruning saws, sold at Lowe’s stores in the United States and Lowes.com between January and May 2026. The 6.0Ah and 3.0Ah batteries were also available separately from the tools.

You can view the entire list of affected product kits on the recall page.

These Kobalt 24V USB-C batteries were recalled after Greenworks received 34 reports of the batteries producing smoke, sparking, or catching fire while the batteries were inserted in the tool and charging via the USB-C port, posing a risk of serious injury from fire hazard.

How to File a Recall Claim on Your Kobalt Battery

Greenworks and Kobalt urge consumers using these batteries to stop charging them using the USB-C port while the batteries are inserted in the tool, and to contact Greenworks to receive a free replacement battery.

To file a recall claim, complete the registration form. Greenworks will send you non-USB-C replacement batteries, a charger adapter, a warning label to attach to your applicable 24V or 48V lawn tools, an updated product manual, and a pre-paid shipping label with instructions for returning your recalled USB-C batteries, all free of charge.
