Edgers don’t always get the same attention as mowers or trimmers, but when it comes to dialing in a clean, professional-looking lawn, they make all the difference. The challenge is finding one that balances power, control, and ease of use—especially as battery-powered options continue to expand.
The Makita 40V max XGT Edger (GEU01) steps into that space with a gas-equivalent power claim, a well-balanced design, and a handful of thoughtful features aimed at improving precision. On paper, it looks like a serious contender—but how it translates to real edging performance is what really matters.
Pros
- Confident power level
- Excellent ergonomics and balance
- Low vibration
- Easy blade replacement
- Metal blade guard
- Sightling indicator
Cons
- The bare tool is a little expensive
Makita 40V max XGT Edger Performance

Speed and Power
At its heart, the Makita GEU01 is powered by a brushless motor and produces power equivalent to a 31cc gas-powered edger. This edger has a top speed of 4,800 RPM, and while it is an effective tool, it’s notably lower than many of its battery-powered contemporaries that hover in the 8,000 to 10,000 RPM range. With that said, we know there is often an inverse relationship between speed and torque. So, I’m inclined to believe that this trimmer will handle thick overgrowth better than other models (more on this later).

Size and Weight

The Makita GEU01 weighs 12.4 pounds as a bare tool, 15.3 pounds with the recommended 5.0Ah battery, and measures 70 inches from end to end. For me, the length is absolutely spot-on. It’s long enough, so I don’t need to bend over, but not so long that it’s unwieldy.
Another important factor for me is the balance, and I think Makita got it just right. There is a slight rear bias with a 5.0Ah battery, but when I swapped it out for a 4.0Ah battery, the balance was essentially neutral. The weight and balance aren’t major issues since this edger rolls along the ground, but it’s nice that you can always lighten up the load with one of Makita’s smaller batteries.
Grip and Trigger

Looking at the grip, Makita took a similar approach to what we saw on the 40V max XGT GRU07 String Trimmer. On top, you have a power button that activates the tool and a beaver tail safety switch to prevent accidental activation. On the underside, Makita equipped this edger with a curved two-finger trigger.
Blade Changes

Sooner or later, you’ll need to swap out your edger blade. They’re fairly inexpensive, and the process only takes a few minutes.
Start by removing the battery to prevent accidental activation. Next, orient the hole on the spindle washer forward so that it aligns with the gearbox. Last, insert the included hex wrench into the hole to lock everything in place.
From there, simply loosen the reverse thread (lefty-tighty) spindle nut with the included wrench, replace the blade, and then reverse the process to put it all back together.
Additional Features
- Adjustable Blade Depth: Quickly adjust the guide wheel up and down to your desired cut depth
- Metal Blade Guard: Protects yourself and others from any potential flying debris
- Sightline Indicator: Helps you align the blade without a direct visual line of sight
Hands-On Testing: Makita 40V max XGT Edger
Putting this edger to the test is a little tricky, since it is essentially a one-trick pony. We started right here at our shop by cleaning up some of the sidewalks and edging around the driveway. Unsurprisingly, the GEU01 sailed through this part with flying colors and left a clear, defined edge in its wake. But any run-of-the-mill edger can handle light trimming…we wanted to put all 31 cc’s of power to the test.
With that in mind, I headed to the one place I knew that could really challenge this tool—my overgrown yard. The grass along the apron of my aging driveway has a habit of creeping onto the concrete, creating a thick mat of grass and sand. My goal was to power through the overgrowth and create a defined edge that’s a little more appealing from the curb.
Starting slow, I eased the edger into the grass and followed the concrete until I reached the asphalt street. To my delight, the GEU01 maintained RPMs throughout the endeavor, resulting in a clean cut that didn’t take a lot of effort on my part.
After a little cleanup with my shovel and a leaf blower, this was the final product. The Makita GEU01 chewed through approximately 2 inches of overgrown grass and sand in a matter of seconds. The motor never stalled or showed any signs of slowing down, marking a big win for battery-powered edgers!
Should You Buy It?
The Makita GEU01 is a well-thought-out edger that prioritizes control, torque, and user experience over chasing high RPM numbers.
It delivers a confident power level that handles typical edging tasks with ease and shows strong torque when working through thicker overgrowth, such as St. Augustine runners (stolons). The ergonomics and balance are standout features, especially with the ability to fine-tune the feel by swapping battery sizes. Add in the low vibration and intuitive controls, and you’ve got a tool that’s comfortable to use over extended periods.
Makita also keeps things practical with easy blade changes, a durable metal guard, and a helpful sightline indicator that improves accuracy when visibility is limited.
The biggest drawback is the price of the bare tool, which sits on the higher end of the category. However, for folks already invested in the XGT platform—or those looking for a refined, Pro-focused edging solution—the performance and design make a strong case.
If you value balance, control, and consistent cutting performance over raw top-end speed, the GEU01 fits its role extremely well.
The Makita GEU01 retails for $469 as a bare tool and is backed by a 3-year limited warranty.
