The Home Depot announced a new program today that will aid U.S. service men and women with theย knowledge and resources they need to successfully transition into theย civilian workforce. The newย program is called Mission: Transition, and is a concentrated effort by Theย Home Depot to assist the military community with job search strategiesย and tools for today’s challenging employment market. Whenย Home Depot Helps Veterans, we want to support them in their efforts.
Specifically, Mission: Transition will aid a service member’s job search through customized training events and career tools:
- Civilian Career Workshops: On October 27, 2012,ย The Home Depot will conduct more than 100 half-day training sessionsย across the country to help members of the military with their job searchย in most any industry or with most any employer. These workshops, whichย will be held at select Home Depot stores across the country and otherย company facilities, will include coaching on resume optimization forย civilian jobs, interview tips and more.
- Online Military Skills Translator: The Home Depot’s new ”ย skills translator” is a program designed to help translate and match an applicant’sย unique military skills with positions that might offer the best fit.
This initiative means thatย Home Depot helps veterans with learning new skills after their time overseas comes to an end. It’s impressive, and we want to support it in any way we can. Our men and women of the military community are important and, given that Theย Home Depot currently employs more than 35,000 veterans and serviceย members (1,500 of which are deployed for active duty at any given time), we’re talking about an organization with an excellent track record.ย Additionally, The Home Depot Foundation has committed a total of $80 million to support veterans’ housing initiatives.
“Members of the United Statesย military are great assets to America’s workforce, yet the outstandingย skills they possess can be difficult to translate during the applicationย or interview process. Through Mission: Transition, weย want to help service men and women highlight their unique skills toย successfully pursue opportunities with any employer, not just The Homeย Depot.”
-Tim Crow,ย The Home Depot EVP โ Human Resources
Workshop locations and registration details are available on The Home Depot’s careers website. Space is limited, but workshops are open to any member of the military or veteran transitioning to a civilian career.
