Battery-powered mowers have made huge strides in recent years, but the real challenge isn’t just replacing gas—it’s delivering the kind of performance Pros can count on day after day.

The Greenworks Commercial 22-Inch Self-Propelled Mower enters that conversation with bold claims of gas-equivalent power, Pro-grade construction, and the runtime to handle serious mowing duties. From the outset, it clearly seems like it’s built to do more than just maintain the small lawns of suburbia.

The real question is whether these claims translate into real-world performance that meets the expectations of a Professional-grade mower.

Greenworks Commercial Self-Propelled Mower Performance

Cutting Power

At its heart, this mower houses a brushless motor that produces up to 4kW of power output and spins the blade up to 17,000 FPM. Greenworks tells us this mower is equivalent to a 230cc gas model, which is right in line with what we expect from a medium-duty professional mower.

The ATM22A features three speed modes—Auto, Low, and High for those truly overgrown areas. The Auto mode will temporarily kick up the blade speed from 2,600 RPM to 3,000 RPM during rougher patches. It then brings the speed back down once it senses that you’re through. Low speed hovers right around a constant 2,800 RPM, while High speed sits at 3,000 RPM.

For my testing, I decided to just leave it in Auto mode to see how the machine would react.

Cut Quality

As mower technology advances, more and more manufacturers are moving to a 2-blade configuration, but in this case, Greenworks went with a single-blade design. The two blades generate a ton of updraft to assist with bagging and mulching, but in this case, I don’t think it’s necessary.

The ATM22A mulched and bagged exactly like a Pro-grade mower should, and left behind only the occasional rogue blade. Overall, I think the single-blade is the right choice for this mower. It generated plenty of lift for bagging, and the mulched grass I observed was very small and blended in perfectly. Single-blade systems are also easier to maintain, sharpen, and replace.

Runtime

Runtime is one of those factors that’s a little hard to nail down because there are several factors that come into play. Everything from grass height, species, moisture level, and ambient temperature all matter when it comes to runtime.

Greenworks tells us that you can expect around 90 minutes of continuous runtime, and you should be able to cover about 1.5 acres using two 8.0Ah batteries.

This is pretty respectable for a self-propelled lawn mower, but if you need more runtime, Greenworks has a solution! The ATM22A is compatible with Greenworks’ 82V 16Ah external suitcase battery (BD161) that plugs via a proprietary cable into the side of the power head and sits right behind it. That effectively doubles your runtime, though at a cost of around $850, not including the $160 bracket and cable assembly.

Noise Level

One of the biggest highlights of this mower is the extremely low noise level. This mower clocked a remarkable 74 dBA on Auto mode and 78 dBA on high, and this was measured from my ear! This noise level rivals some of the quietest mowers I’ve ever tested, like the Ryobi 40V Whisper Series AWD RY40HPLM03.

Drive and Blade Controls

Looking down at the control panel, Greenworks opted for a series of rocker-style switches rather than blister buttons or a touch screen. There’s a power switch, blade speed control, drive speed control, and a switch to power up the LED headlights.

Control Panel

I really like this design because it’s clean, simple, and easy to manipulate on the fly. Along with the buttons, you have a small LCD screen that displays battery life, blade speed, drive speed, and operating hours. The only downside to this screen is that, like most LCD displays, it’s hard to see in direct sunlight.

Looking at the presence bars, I really like Greenworks’ configuration. The lower bar controls the self-propelled drive while the upper bar activates the blades. My only complaint in this area is an ergonomic one: I wish the bars were recessed further into the grip. At least the tension on both bars is moderate, so they don’t feel like they’re digging into your hands.

Drive Speed

As with most modern self-propelled mowers, the drive speed is adjustable. The Greenworks Commercial 22-Inch Self-Propelled Mower has six speed modes ranging from 1.8 MPH up to a brisk 4.0 MPH. I found mode 3 was the most comfortable speed for me, but you can always kick it up to top speed if you really want to get a workout in!

One factor that really stood out to me is the smooth self-propelled drive, and this is all thanks to the hub-mounted motors. These motors function very similarly to what you’d find on a modern EV car. Greenworks traded out the clunky, noisy gearbox for these nearly silent hub motors. On top of that, the acceleration is very smooth and reminds me of my old gas-powered self-propelled mower. You really have to experience it to understand just how smooth and quiet this system is.

Deck Design

This mower features a cast aluminum deck, which is quite a departure from the poly decks we typically see on battery-powered mowers. During our testing, it seemed to have extremely efficient airflow underneath, resulting in very successful bagging and mulching.

There is one major tradeoff, and that’s the weight. Although aluminum is traditionally pretty lightweight, the cast aluminum deck on this mower is much beefier than many of the stamped and poly decks we encounter. It’s not a deal-breaker, but the extra weight is definitely noticeable when you make a turn.

Deck Height Adjustment

Height Adjustment Lever

Greenworks took a slight detour from the traditional Pro 4-point adjustment style and opted for a single-point adjustment lever. This allows you to quickly raise and lower the deck without issue. The deck height ranges from 1 to 4.5 inches with 8 positions to choose from.

Personally, I’m glad Greenworks went with the single-point system. While independent wheel adjustment can be handy in some situations, this one simple lever is easy to operate and ensures a nice, even cut.

Handle Height Adjustment

So far, I’ve loved just about everything about this mower…until now. There are three handle height settings, which is great. However, adjusting to a new position is a little cumbersome. To adjust the height, you’ll need to remove the pins near the base of the handle and then move it to your desired height.

This isn’t a dealbreaker by any means, but we do tend to prefer a single-point adjustment system. It comes in handy when the same equipment is being used by different operators.

Additional Features

  • LED Headlight: Keep working in low light conditions
  • IPX5 Rated: Wet grass and light rain are no match for this mower
  • Presence Bar Safety Latch: Prevents accidental blade activation during transport

How I Tested

For testing, I brought this mower home and cleaned up my yard a bit. The grass was pretty overgrown, so I definitely had my work cut out for me.

I set the deck height to 3 inches and decided to use the collection bag since the grass was a little tall, and I wanted to avoid potential clumping.

Right off the bat, the first thing I noticed was the noise…or lack thereof! This mower is extremely quiet, even compared to the many dozens of other battery-powered lawn mowers I’ve tested. On top of the quiet mowing, the hub-mounted drive motors are nearly silent, so there’s no extra noise while you work. This is a major advantage for Pros who like to start early and work late into the evening.

Looking back over the area, I did notice the occasional missed blade, but the actual cut quality was exactly what I would expect from a mower in this class. On top of that, overgrown Bahia grass is a tough challenge for any mower, so I’m not bothered by a few stray blades of grass.

Overall, the ATM22A is easy to use, it feels very solid, and in the end, the results speak for themselves.
