Earlier this year, we got our hands on Milwaukee’s newest batch of cordless ratchets, and boy, were they impressive. Now, the Milwaukee M12 Fuel Extended Reach Ratchets have hit the market, and we’re excited to dive in and see what sets these models apart from the crowd. Are these the right tools for your arsenal? Speed and Power

At the heart of these extended reach ratchets, you have a brushless motor that churns out between 300 and 550 RPMs and between 45 and 80 ft-lbs of torque, depending on the model. Unsurprisingly, these specs mirror Milwaukee’s standard length M12 Fuel cordless ratchets we reviewed earlier.

At these torque levels, stubborn nuts and bolts don’t stand a chance, meaning you won’t need to reach for your old breaker bar as often.

As you can see, Milwaukee made some impressive strides forward in terms of speed and power with this new batch of extended reach ratchets.

Hands-On Impressions

In a recent review of the DeWalt 20V Max XR Sealed Head Ratchet, I conducted one of our standard impact tool tests to see how well the ratchet would handle breaking a bolt that was torqued to 55 ft-lbs. Granted, cordless ratchets are not impact tools, but it is likely that you’ll encounter a seized nut or bolt from time to time. With that in mind, we did the same tests with these ratchets to see how they’d fare.

Unsurprisingly, the 1/4-inch 3058 and its 45 ft-lbs of muscle struggled to break the bolts loose. With the size fasteners you typically use that drive size to deal with, you’ll almost never need to break 55 ft-lbs. That’s a whole other level of neglect if it gets that bad.

However, the other two models didn’t show any signs of giving up and powered through each bolt with confidence. That’s a big deal for a cordless ratchet, especially for heavy-duty mechanical applications.

Keep in mind, you can always manually break a nut or bolt like you would with your regular ratchet, and then simply use the motor to finish removing it. Conversely, you can use the motor’s power to drive the fastener and then manually snug it down.

For me, I think the speed is dead on the money. It’s perfect for running out those longer bolts, but the trigger is also easy to feather for more precise applications.

Size and Weight

Overall, these are among the most well-balanced extended-reach ratchets I’ve ever used, with weights ranging from 2.4 to 2.6 pounds with the kitted 2.5Ah battery. As for length, they range from 15.4 inches up to 16.5 inches, giving you plenty of length to access those harder-to-reach fasteners. On top of that, the head profiles are incredibly slim, so tight spaces aren’t an issue.

I’m glad that Milwaukee released these ratchets on their M12 platform rather than M18. I’m sure they could have squeezed a little more power out of the larger batteries, but their low-profile, lightweight design is very easy to maneuver, resulting in less wrist fatigue during long work days.

Just like we saw on the standard length models, these ratchets feature Milwaukee’s innovative modular trigger system. The ratchets come with a standard button trigger installed, but an additional paddle trigger is included in the box if you prefer that style.

In a matter of seconds, you can easily swap the trigger configuration to change the activation style. The system supports five trigger configurations that you can buy separately, so you can choose the one that best fits your workflow.

Personally, I tend to prefer paddle triggers because they offer much more flexibility on grip positions. But, the beauty of this kit is that you can personalize the tool to fit your preferences.

Some Pros may prefer the traditional paddle-style trigger, which feels similar to a pneumatic ratchet. Others may favor a more compact button-style configuration for tighter spaces.

The modular design gives you the flexibility to adapt the tool to your preferences rather than forcing you to adapt to the tool.

Should You Buy It?

The Milwaukee M12 Fuel Extended Reach Ratchets are an easy recommendation for mechanics who regularly find themselves fighting for access in tight spaces. Each one has plenty of power that’s proportionate to its anvil size, and they all have more than enough speed to quickly seat those longer bolts.

Keep in mind, all that power and speed won’t replace your impact wrench or your battle-tested manual ratchets, nor are they supposed to. Rather, these specialized tools aim to dramatically speed up those repetitive fastening tasks while giving you access where larger tools simply can’t go.

The big question for me is whether the benefits outweigh the $379 price tag. Granted, this is a premium tool that’s built to withstand the rigors of an automotive shop, and the price does align with similar Pro models on the market. With that said, Milwaukee’s ergonomic grip, slim head design, and interchangeable trigger system make a strong case for dropping a little extra cash. If that sounds like a winning combination to you, I say pull the trigger.
