Skil’s Compact 4V PWRCore Go Lineup Includes Precision Screwdriver Kit

If you wear glasses or carry hand tools like pocket knives or multi-tools, you’re probably well-acquainted with precision screwdrivers. However, is a battery-powered electric version really more useful than your standard manual driver for tiny fasteners? We’ve seen tools like Ryobi’s Microtech electric screwdriver hit the scene this past year, and now Skil has its own version with the 4V PWRCore Go precision screwdriver.

I wanted to walk through the basics of this tool to see how it compares to similar models, and help you decide if a battery-powered precision screwdriver makes sense for the way you work.

Skil 4V Precision Screwdriver Overview

Skil Precision Screwdriver

Skil’s PWRCore Go system is home to compact, rechargeable 4V tools that Skil says are easy to use and compact enough to store away for grab-and-go use. As for this precision screwdriver, the brand claims it’s intended for DIY repairs, electronics maintenance, and household tasks.

As a precision driver, it’s especially appealing for things like glasses repair and hand tool maintenance. However, those tasks require a lot of control, and electronic torque may seem intimidating for fasteners that are easy to overdrive. Luckily, Skil addresses this by limiting the tool’s torque levels. It features two power modes, delivering up to 0.2 Nm (1.8 in-lbs) of torque in Soft mode, and 3 Nm (27 in-lbs) of torque in Hard mode.

In the lower setting, you’re unlikely to overdrive in any material, so it’s ideal for tasks like fastening small screws into your glasses or electronics repair.

Physical Design

While this tool is small enough that you don’t need a large motor or battery, the challenge with this type of tool is keeping it slim enough to make sense as a replacement (or supplement) for manual screwdrivers. While it’s thicker than most hand-turn precision screwdrivers, Skil gave it an “ergonomic, pen-like design.” This is similar to what brands like Ryobi and Craftsman have used in their precision screwdriver blueprints, and it enables easy and intuitive one-handed use.

The control panel is really straightforward and easy to access. On one side of the driver, you have both the forward/reverse switch, as well as the power mode toggle switch.

The driver end of the handle is also textured to give you a firm grip when you’re working on precision tasks. At the other end is the USB-C port to hook in your charging cable.

Wrapping up the design of the driver, you get an LED work light that illuminates your project. The light comes on automatically when you activate the tool, and turns off on its own after a few seconds of inactivity.

What’s Included?

Skil Precision Screwdriver

Skil packs this precision screwdriver with 50 of the most common bits you’ll need. The screwdriver has a 1/4-inch hex shank, so if there’s a bit you need that’s not included, it’s easy enough to customize usability with additional bits.

You also get a pair of tweezers and a spudger to help you grab small fasteners that would be difficult to pick up with your fingers.

The case itself is pretty clever. The driver slides into a storage slot in the container that leaves its charging port exposed. The case is shaped sort of like a triangular prism, with magnetic bit storage on two sides and accessory storage at the top.

Interestingly, Skil also included a magnetic mat for screw organization that’s complete with a printed 6-inch ruler, angle-measurement protractor, and a grid overlay for customizable fastener organization. When you’re done, the magnetic mat folds over the bit storage sections to close off the case for storage.

Skil 4V Precision Screwdriver Price

This screwdriver retails for $59 and includes the 50-piece bit set, a USB-C charging cable, spudger, tweezers, and carrying case with a built-in magnetic mat. Skil backs this tool set with a 2-year warranty.

Should You Buy It?

At under $60 for the set, this precision screwdriver set offers a great value, especially when you consider what’s included. It isn’t going to break most budgets, but it’s still a bit more than you might pay for a manual precision driver set.

However, there are still a couple of questions remaining. First, do you think an electric precision screwdriver will improve your workflow? And second, are you willing to trade off the superior grip and size of manual screwdrivers to achieve it?

If the answer to both questions is yes, this is a model that’s probably worth considering. If you do a lot of repetetive driving work on small fasteners, it might make your projects much easier and quicker, which may justify the price increase over manual precision solutions.
