Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

Battery Reviews & Chargers

Our charger and battery reviews for cordless tools evaluate battery packs, battery chargers, and other technologies and accessories. We tackle cordless batteries, chargers, and accessories for everything from 3.6V to 120V systems. A few years ago we would have said from 3.6V to 36V. Recently, however, advances in outdoor power equipment have yielded battery packs with much higher voltages. Add new products like DeWalt FlexVolt technology, and you can see there is a lot of room for adept battery reviews. Even the new Milwaukee 9.0 Ah High Demand battery shook up the market with power reserves never before seen in cordless power tools. Chargers and Battery Reviews for Tradesmen For the average tradesmen, they want a battery that will last. A lot of times that goes along with the tool being used. Other times, however, a superior battery platform can also bring the best out of a cordless tool. Better batteries bring longer run-times and more power (thanks to higher power densities in lithium-ion batteries). When new battery technology and products come out, we let you know with our battery reviews and break down the facts.

Milwaukee RedLithium Batteries

Milwaukee RedLithium 2.0 and XC4.0 Batteries

As the name suggests, RedLithium 2.0 and XC4.0 batteries indicate a new 2.0Ah and 4.0Ah capacity for Milwaukee’s M12 and M18 batteries. These RedLithium 2.0 and XC4.0 batteries are the new 6th generation packs that last longer and put out more current. The 2.0 batteries feature a massive 33% increase in the Ah rating for the former standard or compact batteries and the XC4.0 batteries provide the same level of increase (33%) for the XC (eXtended Capacity) batteries. That takes the compact or standard battery from 1.5Ah to 2.0Ah and the XC batteries from 3.0Ah to a full 4.0Ah. The changes are due to better cell construction and pack performance as well as enhancements to the monitoring electronics. You get a lot more work done per charge.

Paintable Lithium-ion Battery Technology Developed

Paintable Lithium-ion Battery Technology Developed

Let me just start off by voicing a general sense of wariness with new Lithium-ion technology in general. While there are tons and tons of articles about new anode and cathode technology, slimmer batteries, and differing compounds… most of the tech has been theoretical, or at the very least, impractical to mass produce. I’m going […]

Can Tin Anodes Make for Better Lithium-ion Batteries?

We keep following the news on Lithium-ion because, well, it’s an evolving technology. The thing with Li-ion batteries is that it represents a major leap forward in terms of power-to-weight ratios and performance capabilities. However, it’s not a quantum leap forward over NiCd batteries or NiMH batteries. No, for that we’ll need to experience something […]

Ultimate Battery Power UBP5000BT-DW-CH Battery Belt Review

Ultimate Battery Power Battery Belt

If you have a lot of DeWalt, Ryobi or Craftsman 18V cordless tools and find yourself frequently running out of battery power, the Ultimate Battery Power Battery Belt is something you should definitely check out. Repetitious or continuous use of cordless power tools can be troubling, since you normally need to keep a collection of batteries on the ready. Recently, we spent some time with the new Ultimate Battery Power UBP5000BT-DW-CH Battery Belt which came with the battery adapter for top post style 18V DeWalt cordless tools. The concept behind this battery belt is that it gives you up to 3.5 times longer run-time – and that means getting through a project on a single charge and with no battery changes.

Milwaukee M18 & M12 Multi-Voltage Charger 48-59-1812 Preview

Milwaukee M18 & M12 Multi-Voltage Charger 48-59-1812

Charging batteries can be a pain. It can be especially meddlesome when you have multiple voltages and multiple battery types. Take Milwaukee, for example, we love both their M12 and M18 line of tools, but why do we need to have duplicate charging bays? Apparent;y, we don’t – not anymore. Milwaukee debuted its M18 & M12 Multi-Voltage Charger (48-59-1812) at their New Tools press event earlier this year. With the lifting of the embargo, we can now talk about it openly. This is very very cool for anyone using both platforms. The new Energy Star rated unit will charge all M18 and M12 Lithium-ion batteries sequentially, allowing the user to put both packs on the charger and walk away confident that they will be ready for their next job.

Porter-Cable PCC580B 18V Battery Status Indicator Preview

Porter-Cable isn’t known for their advanced battery technology – particularly when it comes to knowing how much charge is left. They seem to be taking that into account and have released an 18V Battery Status Indicator (PCC580B). The 18V Battery Status Indicator is a very simple, very inexpensive tool that lets owners and users of Porter-Cable’s power tools to check the battery charge status quickly and easily. This is one way in which you can avoid slapping in a dead battery and climbing up that ladder – only to realize that you need to clamber back down and get a fresh one.

Bosch to Develop New Lithium-ion Batteries in Eisenach, Germany

Bosch to Develop New Lithium-ion Batteries in Eisenach, Germany

Robert Bosch GmbH appears to be setting up a new lithium-ion plant in Eisenach, Germany. They are dubbing it a “pilot production line” and it seems to be geared towards making inroads into efficiencies and mass-production of newer, better lithium-ion battery cells and assemblies. The line is fast under way and should be yielding its […]

Self-healing Li-ion Batteries on the Horizon

Self-healing li-ion batteries would mean a dramatic improvement in the battery’s ability to sustain itself through extended use. Lithium-ion batteries undergo cracking, deterioration, and electrochemical pulverization during the significant volume changes associated with the insertion and leaving of Li+ ions during charging and discharging. This damage accumulates over time and, as a result, the efficiency […]

Craftsman QuickBoost Charger Preview

The Craftsman brand debuted a one-of-a-kind, time-saving technology for its cordless line of 12-volt lithium-ion NEXTEC power tools this week at the 2011 International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Orlando. With its new QuickBoost Charger, Craftsman is doing something that no other major brand is at least claiming to be able to do: bring a completely dead battery back up to a 25 percent charge in three minutes. This is to provide the extra “boost” needed to finish up the job at hand.
