You may not know it, but a paint’s ability to “hide” is among its greatest attributes. Currently, TiO2 (Titanium dioxide) is the key to paint’s capability for covering up what’s underneath it. Without Titanium dioxide, paint would just smear on a wall – and covering up that Blue with red, white, blue, or green would […]
Black and Decker “rolled out” (get it?) a new paint roller this month that comes with a side-pivoting head that also stores paint within its long handle. The new Black and Decker RapidRoller paint roller system is designed for fast painting and ease of use. The new Paint Roller gets rid of the requirement of having to constantly […]
At the NAHB International Builders’ Show (IBS) last week, Masterchem Industries, manufacturer of top-of-the-line architectural coatings including Behr paint and its flagship KILZ brand products, debuted KILZ PRO-X Interior Latex Paint, the company’s newest product line specially engineered for painting and wall covering contractors, general contractors, residential remodelers, commercial and property managers, as well as […]
Pantone announced a new compact, handheld device that lets design professionals, contractors, paint retailers and do-it-yourselfers confidently measure and match color inspiration instantly – from small, patterned, multi-colored textures and textiles to walls and carpeting. They are calling it, sensibly, CapSure. Created for professionals in fashion, home furnishings, interior, industrial and graphic design, as well […]
This topic is way bigger than a Top 5 list but we figure we might as well start somewhere. The other day we were sitting around the water cooler and talking about when we first moved out of our parents house. When you get that first place, you run into a number of problems that you never really had to think about. Either your Dad (or Mom) did them for you or they had all the tools on hand to get the job done easily. But now you’re on your own with limited tools (maybe some sort of going away present from the folks) and you’ve got to make do. What were the first things we ran across. Well, here they are.
Little Giant Ladder Systems just announced a new SumoStance extension ladder, a wide-stance extension ladder which they showed off at the National Safety Congress and Expo in San Diego, California last week. The SumoStance triples the base width of ordinary extension ladders and increases side-tip stability by over 500%, resulting in a new category of extension ladders that work on nearly any uneven surface.
The new EPA Lead Paint Renovation, Repair & Painting rules have been causing quite a stir, but the latest takes the cake. It seems that the current test kits available on the market are somewhat inaccurate. In fact, they indicate “false positives” of lead being present by as much as 72% of the time. The […]
Earlier this year we sent our own Thomas Gaige to get certified for the lead-safe removal of lead paint. One of the biggest gripes we had was that the test kits were made by only one manufacturer (currently Hybrivet Systems’ LeadCheck) – and they seemed to be perpetually on back-order. Now, the U.S. EPA has […]
The Milwaukee 8975-6 11.6 Amp Dual Temperature Heat Gun might look a little like your wife’s hair dryer but it really is a serious hand-held high heat throwing machine. With two temperature settings of 570 and 1,000 degrees F, you can pretty much peel the paint off of almost anything without having to worry about the issues that come with open flames. With a continuous duty rating, you can also plan on being able to work this tool non-stop for as long as you need it.
There are many questions that have come up about the new rules and laws regarding the way contractors must deal with lead-based paint. For some time now there have been handouts and brochures on the paint counters of all the local home improvement centers and paint stores that highlight the issues with lead-based paint. NAdditionally, these documents threaten huge fines if you are not compliant. Since lead-safe certification is now required as of April 22, 2010, there is a new urgency throughout the residential and commercial industries to become compliant. Both individuals and companies now have to become educated and certified in dealing with lead paint issues according to the EPA and HUD guidelines and rules.
